Most people read energy prices from the wrong end of the chain.

They see gasoline.
They see electricity bills.
They see inflation headlines.

By the time those show up, the signal is already old.

Energy cost pressure usually starts earlier, in the physical system: ships, terminals, refineries, diesel inventories, freight contracts, transformers, and capacity markets. The screen price is only the last translation.

That is the lesson here.

The cost of hiring a very large crude carrier, or VLCC, on a key long-haul crude route reached W218.52, equal to about $206,141 per day. That was nearly four times higher than at the start of the year…

A few weeks later, diesel was sending the same message. The ultra-low-sulfur diesel crack spread hit a record $86.25 per barrel, up 105%. Gasoline cracks also rose, reaching $37.62 per barrel…

For a beginner, a crack spread is simple. It is the rough margin refiners earn when they turn crude into products like diesel, gasoline, and jet fuel.

When cracks rise, refiners usually make more money.. which comes from somewhere.

It comes from the buyer of the refined product !

That buyer may be a trucking fleet, mining company, railway, construction contractor, farmer, shipping line, utility, or data centers operator.

Refiners feel the benefit first and the physical economy feels the cost later.

That delay is where the market often misses the story.

Oil does not move itself

A barrel sitting at an export terminal is not useful to a refinery until it arrives.

That means freight matters.

Think of buying a machine part. The part may cost $1,000. If transport costs $100, your landed cost is $1,100. But if transport jumps to $400, the same part now costs you $1,400 delivered.

Oil works the same way.

A higher tanker rate does not always show up as a clean headline in crude prices. Sometimes it appears inside delivered crude differentials. Sometimes inside refinery margins. Sometimes inside product cracks. Sometimes inside working capital.

This is why physical markets are different from financial markets.

Financial markets can reprice in seconds, traders can change their mind and act fast in front of there screen…
Physical markets move at the speed of ships, storage tanks, refinery runs, truck fleets, and contract resets.

That is slower… it is also more powerful.

Refiners get paid first

The first obvious winner from a product squeeze is the refiner.

Refiners buy crude and sell usable fuels. If diesel and gasoline rise faster than crude, refinery margins expand. That is why the refiner trade was easy to see.

Major U.S. refiners including Valero, Phillips 66, and Marathon Petroleum were up more than 20% year-to-date as investors priced stronger margins.

That is the visible trade.

Refiner’s margin is not free money. It is a cost transferred downstream.

If refiners earn more per barrel of diesel, someone else pays more per barrel of diesel. That is not a moral statement. It is just the chain.

The equity market usually prices the refiner benefit quickly. It prices the downstream cost slowly.

That is where the opportunity, and the risk, usually sits.

Diesel is the industrial fuel

Gasoline is mostly a consumer fuel.

Diesel is different.

Diesel powers or supports trucks, rail, mining equipment, construction machinery, agricultural equipment, backup generators, emergency systems, marine fuel markets, and remote operations.

That makes diesel one of the cleanest signals for the physical economy.

When gasoline rises, households feel it at the pump.
When diesel rises, the whole supply chain feels it through freight, production, and reliability costs.

A high diesel crack is not only a refinery margin story. It is also an industrial cost warning… Diesel is the fuel of movement.

When movement gets expensive, everything in the downstream gets tested.

The container leg comes next

Now move from oil tankers to container ships.

Container ships carry finished goods: electronics, appliances, furniture, machinery, parts, clothing, and industrial components. Those ships also burn fuel.

Precision matters here. Marine gasoil is directly linked to distillates like diesel. Very low sulfur fuel oil, or VLSFO, is not the same as diesel. It is usually a blended marine fuel. But when low sulfur blending components get tight, VLSFO can also move higher with a lag.

Shipping companies do not absorb that forever. Fuel costs move into freight rates through contract resets, bunker adjustment factors, and surcharges.

The Shanghai Containerized Freight Index reached 2,140.66 in mid-May, up 13.47% over the trailing month.

That was not a 2021-style freight explosion but it was a warning light.

Importers usually feel it later: Contracts reset, inventory turns, freight invoices roll through cost of goods sold. Then the margin hit appears.

The grid is the slowest link

The power grid does not run mainly on diesel. That is not the point.

The point is that power systems are already tight, and tight systems are expensive to manage.

The grid is dealing currently with major data-center growth, industrial electrification, aging infrastructure, delayed generation projects, and long equipment lead times.

The biggest bottleneck is often not fuel. It is equipment.

A transformer allows electricity to move safely between voltage levels. Without transformers, large new loads, substations, power plants, and renewable projects cannot connect on schedule.

Average lead times of roughly 144 weeks for generator step-up transformers, 128 weeks for large power transformers, and 44 weeks for high-voltage switchgear.

That is not a minor delay. That is two and a half to three years for critical equipment.

generator step-up transformer demand up 274% since 2019, and power transformer demand up about 119%.

If a data centers or industrial project cannot get grid equipment on time, it has only a few options: wait, move, pay more, build behind-the-meter power, or rely more heavily on backup systems.

None of those options are cheap.

Final takeaway

Energy inflation does not always start at the gas pump.

Sometimes it starts with the cost of moving a barrel. Then it moves into refinery margins, diesel prices, shipping costs, industrial expenses, power-market capacity prices, and eventually the bills paid by businesses and households.

The market usually prices the first step.

It is slower to price the second, third, and fourth.

That is why the chain matters.

Where does the barrel move?
Who pays to move it?
Who refines it?
Who burns the product?
Who absorbs the cost?
Who can pass it through?
Who cannot?

That is where the signal is, the one most energy investor models ignore. That is your edge now.

Paper signaled. Physical delivered. Friday picked a side

Dear Executives, Traders, Investors, and Friends

Sunday, 5am. Coffee is cold but the weather is warm in Doha and the screens are still blinking from Friday’s close.

Oil ripped higher all week. Silver and gold got hammered on Friday.

Same tape. Same macro… Two opposite stories.

The simple version: oil moved because the tanks drew. US crude inventories fell by 4.3 million barrels, deeper than the market expected. Gasoline drew too. Refineries ramped up. That is the operational signature of summer demand arriving early.

The headline lit the match. Inventory supplied the fuel.

Brent finished near $109.26 per barrel, up about 8.1% on the week. WTI closed near $101.02, up roughly 6%. OPEC+ is only adding 188,000 barrels per day in June. US oil rigs remain well below where they were two years ago.

Less incremental supply than feared, and more demand than modeled…

The path of least resistance moved higher.

The US-China visit added a commercial signal, not a geopolitical one. China remains the world’s largest crude importer and the largest LNG buyer. The US has barrels, LNG capacity, and Gulf Coast export infrastructure. If commercial channels reopen even partially, the first impact shows up in cargo routes, tariff math, freight, and Gulf Coast differentials.

Energy bid. Metals flushed. Physical flows mattered more than headlines…

This Week’s Settle

Brent crude closed near $109.26/bbl, up roughly 8.1% on the week.

WTI crude closed near $101.42/bbl, up about 6%.

Henry Hub natural gas finished near $2.96/MMBtu.

Dutch TTF closed near €50.45/MWh, roughly $15/MMBtu equivalent.

JKM Asian LNG was assessed near $18.47/MMBtu.

The pattern: energy bid, metals dumped.

Gold settled at $4,555.80/oz, down 2.6% Friday and 3.5% on the week.

Silver fell about 9.1% Friday, settling near $77/oz.

Copper settled near $6.2515/lb, down about 4.8% Friday but almost flat on the week.

China lithium carbonate closed around 191,000 to 192,000 yuan per ton, still up nearly 198% year-on-year.

THE OIL STORY

Oil ran because the physical balance tightened.

The EIA print showed a 4.3 million barrel crude draw. That was the number that broke consensus. A larger crude draw, a gasoline draw, and stronger refinery runs told the same story: barrels are leaving tanks faster than expected.

Here is the catch. The front of the oil curve ripped. The back barely moved as shared previously. December 2027 Brent still sits far below the prompt contract. That shape is backwardation, as explained last week : It says the spot market is tight while the long-term market is not yet buying a full-cycle shortage.

Plain English: producers can sell forward at strong prices and lock in margin. The smart money is hedging the spike, not marrying it.

The China angle matters through trade flow, not politics. China has not been a meaningful buyer of US crude recently because tariffs and economics blocked the route. At the peak in 2020, US crude exports to China reached roughly 395,000 barrels per day. By 2024, that had already fallen to about 193,000 barrels per day.

So the immediate impact is not a demand flood. It is the possible reopening of a route.

If the economics clear, Gulf Coast barrels get another major buyer in the stack. That matters for WTI-linked crude, export terminals, tanker demand, Gulf Coast differentials, and the Brent-WTI spread.

THE LNG STORY

LNG is simple. Cool gas to around -160°C, turn it into liquid, shrink it by about 600 times, and ship it across oceans.

The US has spent the last decade building expo rt capacity on the Gulf Coast. Golden Pass is bringing Train 1 online. Corpus Christi Stage 3 is ramping trains 5 through 7. Together, they add about 2.1 Bcf/d of new export capacity through the back half of 2026 and into 2027.

That matters because Henry Hub is near $2.96/MMBtu, while TTF is around $15/MMBtu equivalent and JKM is near $18.47/MMBtu. Same molecule. Different destination. Very different price.

Every new LNG train that runs hot pulls more gas off the US domestic balance and sends it into the global market.

China is the swing signal. It still has a tariff wall around US LNG, so the issue is not demand alone. It is netback.

Tariffs change economics.

Economics decide cargo flow.

Two things matter from here: whether US LNG cargoes actually discharge in China, and whether Chinese buyers accelerate term contracts already signed with US projects.

Forget the speeches. Watch cargo destinations, feed gas flows, and contract start dates.

THE METALS FLUSH

Friday hit metals like a margin call.

Gold settled at $4,555.80/oz, down 2.6% on the day. Silver dropped about 9.1%, settling near $77/oz. Copper fell about 4.8% to $6.2515/lb.

This was positioning, not physics.

When too many traders hold the same leveraged position and price turns against them, brokers force selling. That selling creates more selling and the unwind happens in hours…

Gold tested the $4,700 resistance shelf earlier in the week, then flushed back into the mid $4,500s. That is not automatically the trend breaking. That is the trend exhaling.

Silver needs to reclaim $80 to repair momentum. Copper needs to reclaim $6.55. Until then, patience beats prediction.

Lithium is different. China battery-grade lithium carbonate sits around 191,000 to 192,000 yuan per ton, up nearly 198% year-on-year. EV demand and grid-scale storage are still pulling material. Supply cannot respond inside two quarters.

“Don’t confuse the position flush with the cycle break. One is plumbing. The other is physics.”

My Flux Kinetics Trade (GOLD):

Last week we didn’t give any idea on purpose, volatility was present... Gold lost almost 4% with a strong Friday day.

As now we are on the main key zone, if 4,500$ level is protected, and we start to see a bounce on that level. A long can be taken towards 4,670$ with a short stop below 4,485$.

However, if we see that there is no strong momentum to reverse, then a price break below the main key zone (meaning below 4,490) can activate a short toward 4,400.

With a safer perspective, I would wait for 4,363 as the level to potentially enter a long if there is a strong buyer volume.

CHOKEPOINTS AND CAPITAL FLOWS

Three bottlenecks matter.

First, Cushing. Inventory there becomes operationally sensitive as it approaches the low 20 million barrel area. With refinery runs rising and crude drawing, Cushing is tightening.

Second, Gulf Coast feed gas pipelines. The bottleneck is not only the LNG plant. It is the steel between the Permian, Texas demand centers, and the coast.

Third, silver float. Industrial demand is large. Investable metal is thinner than the paper position built on top of it.

Capital flowed toward US midstream and disciplined upstream names using the back of the curve to lock in 2027 cash flow. Capital fled weak-balance-sheet silver beta.

Plumbing one way. P&L the other.

WEEK AHEAD

Watch four things.

EIA crude inventories. Was the 4.3 million barrel draw a one-week shock or the start of a summer pattern?

Cushing. If stocks keep falling, WTI structure matters more.

LNG feed gas. If feed gas rises and Henry Hub stays below $3, supply can absorb the pull. If Henry Hub moves, the export bid is biting.

Metals levels. Silver needs $80. Copper needs $6.55. Gold needs to hold the mid $4,500s.

Final word: the physical market remains the referee.

Paper can chase the headline.

Cargoes, tanks, pipes, and contracts tell the truth.

Both finished the week softer. Brent eased into the close. WTI followed.

Here is the part that matters:

The Strait of Hormuz, the narrow waterway that ships about one in every five barrels of oil consumed in the world, finished its tenth week effectively closed. Also, on Sunday May 3, OPEC+ raised June output quotas by another 188,000 barrels per day.

The cartel raised supply targets while the route that ships its oil stayed “shut”.

Read that twice.

If price is the headline, the water is the commitment. This week, the water did the talking.

• OPEC: The producer group that sets oil supply targets for its members.

• Quota: The production limit each member agrees to follow.

• Floating storage: Crude already loaded onto tankers but not yet delivered. Think of it as a parking lot for barrels at sea.

• VLCC: A Very Large Crude Carrier, the standard tanker that holds about 2 million barrels.

• The Cape route: Going around the southern tip of Africa instead of through the shorter Suez and Hormuz path. Cape route adds about three weeks to a voyage and changes the freight cost dramatically.

The Scoreboard

1. The Hormuz reality

Lloyd’s List had the cleanest math this week. VLCC tonne-miles are up while VLCC tonnes carried are down 36% year-on-year. Translation: the same fleet of tankers is sailing further to deliver less crude. That is what a chokepoint does to physics. It does not stop the steel from moving. It forces the steel to take a longer route.

For newer readers: A chokepoint is a narrow passage where a lot of trade has to pass through. When it closes or slows, every alternative becomes more expensive and slower. Tonne-miles measures the work a tanker fleet does. More tonne-miles for the same fleet means longer voyages. Less tonnes carried means less oil actually delivered.

Day rates tell the same story from a different angle. The tanker market has split into two tiers. Tankers that can take the Cape route are collecting record freight rates because the long way around Africa is suddenly the only way around. Tankers stuck on the Gulf side sit idle and uneconomic. One fleet, two markets, one chokepoint.

Day rates are the price to charter a tanker for one day of voyage. When the same vessel can earn double on a different route, owners reposition fast. When they cannot reposition, the rate collapses on the trapped side and spikes on the available side. That is happening right now.

Floating storage tells the story from the other end. Reporting from El País put combined Gulf floating stockpiles at roughly 30 million barrels at the end of April, up from under 25 million the month before. Those barrels exist on tankers without a clear destination. They are owned. They are loaded. They cannot move at scale until Hormuz clears or until the owners accept the cost of the long way around.

2. The OPEC+ paper barrel

A quota you cannot lift is a sentence on paper. The water decides what it means.

This is where the “Belief vs Reality” Gap opened wide this week… Most of the financial press read the OPEC+ June hike of 188,000 barrels per day as added supply pressure. The shipping data read it as something else. The missing point: most OPEC+ members cannot meet their existing targets while the route is constrained… Adding more on paper does not move a barrel across a closed strait.

Here is the catch: If the Chockepoint reopens in June, the new 188,000 barrels per day arrives on top of a backlog of physical barrels currently sitting in floating storage. That outcome is bearish. If it stays shut, the new quota is a press release and the front of the curve is mispriced low. You can consider either path as a tradeable asymmetry…We are not so sure.

The Flux Kinetics Number: 30 million barrels. That is the floating storage now sitting in and around the Gulf, up roughly 5 million on the month as shared above. It is the biggest physical inventory build the market is not pricing because it cannot reach a delivery point...

When the cartel raises quotas it cannot ship, the press release is louder than the cargo manifest. We watch the manifest.

3. The two US gas markets

EIA reported a 63 Bcf injection for the week ending May 1, taking US working gas storage to 2,205 Bcf. That is a soft injection for the first week of May. The five-year average for that week is normally higher.

Henry Hub responded by holding the $2.780/MMBtu front-month into Friday’s close. The forward curve steepened. July sits at $3.04. August at $3.10. October at $3.15.

For newer readers: An injection is gas going into storage rather than coming out. Storage typically refills from April through October, then drains November through March. A soft injection during refill season tells you that demand is competing harder than usual with the storage pull. Bcf means billion cubic feet. Henry Hub is the main US natural gas pricing point in Louisiana

The reason is not weather. It is the export door. US LNG feedgas averaged 18.85 Bcf/d year-to-date and briefly touched 20.1 Bcf/d in early April per Natural Gas Intelligence. That is not a peak. That is a floor with new export trains coming on later this year and into 2027.

Domestic US gas is comfortable on storage. LNG linked gas is structurally tight on liquefaction throughput. The same molecule has two prices depending on whether it can reach a ship.JKM, the main Asian LNG benchmark, is sitting at $16.87/MMBtu. The spread between Atlantic and Asian gas is wide. US LNG terminals are pulling hard because they own the route out.

4. The metals triad

Three metals moved for three different reasons this week. Treating them as one trade is the mistake.

Gold closed Friday around $4,723/oz, higher on the week, with most of the move coming late as funds covered short positions before the Fed meeting. Silver did the heavier work at $81.33/oz, outperforming on the day and on the week. The gold-silver ratio compressed.

For newer readers: The gold-silver ratio is how many ounces of silver it takes to buy one ounce of gold. A compressing ratio means silver is catching up, usually because industrial demand is alive (solar, EVs, electronics). Funds covering short positions means traders who had bet on lower prices are buying back to close those bets, which pushes prices up.

Copper held near $13,100/t on the LME three-month contract. The story under that price is the grid. ADNOC’s $55 billion contractor pipeline announced last week is one driver. US data center buildout is another. China’s Q2 industrial restock is the third. All three pull on the same copper book at the same time.

Lithium carbonate in China printed roughly 194,000 CNY/t. The narrative coming into this week was that lithium was structurally oversupplied through 2027…

• LNG infrastructure owners with operating cash flow now.

• Cape-capable tanker operators collecting the two-tier freight premium.

• Copper miners with grid and data centers exposure.

Buy the builders. Be selective with the barrels.

Silver hit $121.64 an ounce in January. That was a 147% gain in twelve months, the strongest annual run since 1979. The gold-to-silver ratio, the oldest spread trade in metals, compressed below 50 for the first time since 2012. It has since settled near 60, with gold around $4,800 and silver around $80. Most desks read this as a catch-up trade. Silver closing a valuation gap with gold.

The ratio is no longer just a precious metals indicator. Read against six consecutive years of structural silver deficit, a byproduct supply chain that cannot respond to its own price signal, and a Chinese policy shock about to hit copper smelters, the gold-to-silver ratio has become a real time stress gauge for the physical energy transition itself. The question is not whether silver is cheap relative to gold. The question is whether the industrial economy can source enough of a metal it cannot independently mine.

The Byproduct Trap

About 70 to 75 percent of the world’s silver is not mined from silver mines. It comes out of the ground as a byproduct of copper, lead zinc, and gold operations. This means silver production responds to base metal economics, not silver economics. When copper prices rise, copper miners produce more ore, and more silver falls out. When zinc smelter margins collapse, silver output from those operations contracts. The silver market has no independent supply lever.

This is the structural fact that most ratio analysis ignores.

Per the World Silver Survey 2026, released April 15 by the Silver Institute and Metals Focus, global silver mine production is expected to rise just 1% in 2026 to approximately 820 million ounces. Primary silver mines supply only 28% of that total. The rest is tethered to someone else’s production decision.

“You cannot mine what you do not control. Silver’s supply curve belongs to copper.”

I have watched this dynamic play out across a dozen commodity cycles. A metal whose supply is a footnote in another metal’s mine plan does not behave like a metal with its own production response. It behaves like a hostage.

Where the Ounces Went

The global silver market has run a structural deficit every year since 2021. The cumulative drawdown from above-ground inventories over that period totals 762 million troy ounces. That number is not a rounding error. It is a systematic depletion of the buffer stock that keeps the physical market liquid.

The 2025 deficit came in at 40.3 million ounces. The 2026 deficit, is projected to widen 15% to 46.3 million ounces. Total demand is actually falling 2% in 2026, driven by weaker industrial and jewelry consumption. Supply in the otherside is falling faster, down an estimated 2%, as producer hedging becomes normal after a spike in late 2025…

Now look at the numbers in London. LBMA vaults held 884 million ounces at end-March 2026. Only 28% of that, roughly 248 million ounces, was free float, meaning metal not pledged against exchange-traded products. We can see that lease rates have normalized but the conditions for another squeeze remain in place.

That free float figure is the one the market should be watching. In September 2025, the share fell to a historic low of 17%, and the October liquidity squeeze followed within weeks. Silver spiked to $121 by January.

China’s Acid Chokepoint

On April 10, China informed it will halt exports of sulfuric acid starting in May 2026. This is not a silver story on its face. It is a copper smelting story that becomes a silver story because of the byproduct trap.

Sulfuric acid is essential to copper concentrate processing. China is the world’s dominant copper smelter. Per Reuters reporting on April 14, Chinese smelters will likely press ahead with production curbs as the ban removes a key revenue stream, acid sales, that subsidized smelting margins.

Here is the catch: If Chinese copper plant output falls, byproduct silver from those operations drops with it. Copper-origin silver accounts for roughly 25 to 27 percent of global supply. Even a 5 to 10 percent cut in Chinese copper smelting output would shave millions of ounces off global silver production in a market already running a 46-million-ounce deficit. Those are ounces that do not exist twice.

Business Insider went underground in Bolivia to show why silver's supply can't keep up with the energy transition's appetite:

This is where the gold-silver ratio becomes operationally meaningful. Gold supply is not tethered to copper smelters. Gold is mined from dedicated operations, recycled from jewelry, and stockpiled by central banks. The current forecasts shows central banks will buy approximately 850 tonnes of gold in 2026, with Poland alone taking 20 tonnes in February and the People’s Bank of China adding to reserves for 16 straight months.

Gold supply and demand exist in their own orbit.

Silver does not get that luxury.

When the ratio compresses, it reflects silver gaining ground on gold. When that compression occurs during a sixth consecutive supply deficit, a vault drawdown of three-quarters of a billion ounces and upcoming smelter problem, the ratio is not measuring relative valuation. It’s measuring how hard the physical economy is pulling on a metal it cannot produce fast enough…

The Solar Substitution Paradox

A comfortable rebuttal to this thesis runs as follows: solar manufacturers are replacing silver with copper, so industrial demand is falling, and the deficit will resolve itself.

The numbers partially support that story. Silver demand from the photovoltaic sector fell 6% in 2025 to 186.6 million ounces. It is forecast to fall another 19% in 2026 to roughly 151 million ounces. LONGi Green Energy announced plans in January for mass production of copper-based metallization between April and June 2026. This switch could save the solar industry $15 billion annually at 500 gigawatts of production.

Coin and bar investment demand is forecast to rise 18 to 20 percent in 2026. Western physical buying is recovering after three weak years. Indian investment demand remains strong. Every ounce that solar thrifting releases is claimed by another segment of the market.

The deficit does not close. It reshuffles.

The substitution itself is not clean. The move toward copper‑based plating and mixed silver‑copper pastes. Copper has lower electrical conductivity than silver, and certain cell architectures, particularly TOPCon, are less compatible with alternatives due to high-temperature fabrication. Reliability data from LONGi’s mass production run, expected in the second quarter of 2026, will be the real test. If yield or durability falls short, solar silver demand could stabilise or re accelerate.

I have seen substitution narratives before. Usually, the timeline from lab announcement to reliable mass production at scale is longer than the market prices in… Every time.

What Breaks Next

If China’s sulfuric acid export ban extends through the third quarter of 2026 and copper smelter output falls materially, the 2026 silver deficit could widen beyond the current 46.3-million-ounce forecast. On that trajectory, London free float drops below 200 million ounces, and the conditions for another liquidity squeeze reassemble. This time with less buffer than October 2025.

If that happens, the gold-silver ratio will compress again, from a base of 60, not 88.

Smart money is already positioning for tight supply chains. BHP closed a $4.3 billion silver streaming deal with Wheaton Precious Metals on the Antamina mine in Peru on April 1. That is the largest streaming transaction by upfront payment in history. BHP is monetizing byproduct silver to retain copper exposure. Wheaton is locking in 67.5% of Antamina’s silver output. That is not a speculative bet. That is a physical supply chain play by two companies that model metal flows for a living.

The kill condition is clear: if copper metallization succeeds at scale in solar PV without reliability penalties, and if China lifts the acid ban quickly, the deficit could narrow enough to relieve vault pressure and widen the ratio back toward 70 to 80. That would signal the transition’s material stress is easing. Watch LONGi’s second-quarter production data and China’s acid policy through year-end.

As we covered in our previous analysis of energy transition metals bottlenecks, the physical supply chain rarely cooperates with the deployment timeline the models assume. The gold-silver ratio, in this context, is simply the market’s way of keeping score.

1. Track the LBMA free float monthly. If the non-ETP share drops below 25% of total vault holdings, squeeze risk is elevated. The September 2025 low was 17%. March 2026 reads 28%.

2. Monitor China’s sulfuric acid policy through Q3 2026. Duration matters more than the ban itself. A reversal before August eases the chokepoint. Extension through December tightens it.

3. Watch LONGi’s Q2 2026 copper metallization results. Yield and reliability data from mass production will determine whether solar substitution is real or aspirational.

4. Use the ratio as a regime indicator, not a trade signal. Below 55: physical stress intensifying. 55 to 65: structural tension, manageable. Above 70: stress easing or industrial demand weakening. The direction of the ratio matters more than the level.

   • Compare ratio moves against EV production data, grid interconnection queue length, and data centers power procurement

5. Map silver exposure in energy transition portfolios. Most clean energy funds have zero direct silver exposure. The streaming and royalty companies, Wheaton, Franco-Nevada, Royal Gold, are the transmission mechanism.

   • Review top holdings in transition-themed ETFs for silver supply chain exposure

   • Wheaton’s Antamina stream now makes it the single largest leveraged play on byproduct silver tightness. The gold-silver ratio at 60 is not a valuation anomaly. It is the metals market pricing what the energy transition’s spreadsheets leave out.

If the acid ban holds and substitution stalls, the ratio compresses further in the second half of 2026. And the next time it touches 50, the vaults will have less to give.

Friday closed with Brent at $108.17/bbl and WTI at $101.94/bbl.

Both sold off hard into the weekend. Brent fell 2.02% on Friday. WTI fell 2.98%.

Here is the part that matters: both still finished the week up about 2.95%. So no, this was not a clean bearish week. It was messier than that.

Oil fell on Friday. Products tightened. U.S. crude exports hit a record. Gas stayed cheap in America while LNG plants pulled harder and Abu Dhabi did something the oil market will still be pricing long after this week’s candles are forgotten.

Quick word for newer readers. OPEC is the producer group that coordinates oil supply. A quota is the production limit a member agrees to follow. Capex means capital expenditure, the money companies spend on wells, plants and platforms, pipelines, terminals, equipment, and long-life infrastructure. If price is the headline, capex is the commitment.

This week, the commitment was louder than the close.

This Week’s Settle

Brent: $108.17/bbl, down hard Friday but still +2.95% on the week, as crude stayed supported by physical draws and record U.S. exports.

WTI: $101.94/bbl, down hard Friday but still +2.95% on the week, with U.S. inventories falling while exports hit a record.

Henry Hub gas: $2.780/MMBtu, up about 10% on the week, as lower U.S. output met record LNG feedgas demand.

TTF gas: €45.77/MWh, with Europe still paying for imported molecules while U.S. gas stayed much cheaper.

JKM LNG: $16.865/MMBtu, with Asia still active in spot LNG buying.

Gold: $4,630/oz, high but no longer accelerating.

Silver: $76/oz, holding stronger than gold as industrial demand stayed alive.

THE UAE STORY: Abu Dhabi Walked, ADNOC Funded The Next Phase.

The UAE announced on April 28 that it would leave OPEC and OPEC+, effective May 1.

For newer readers, here is the simple version. OPEC helps manage oil supply through agreed production limits. Those limits can support prices, but they can also restrict producers that have spent heavily to grow capacity.

That is where Abu Dhabi was sitting.

The UAE had capacity above its allowed output. ADNOC had already been building toward a 5 million barrel per day target by 2027. At some point, if you keep spending billions to build capacity but keep accepting limits on using it, the math starts to argue with the membership card.

This week, Abu Dhabi stopped arguing.

The UAE leaving OPEC is not a diplomacy story for me. It is a barrel-and-capex story. UAE’s exit became effective May 1, which gives Abu Dhabi more room to match production policy with its own capacity buildout. Then ADNOC put numbers behind the move: AED 200 billion, about $55 billion, in project awards for 2026 to 2028, supporting a wider five-year $150 billion CAPEX plan. That is the part that matters. More freedom on output only matters if the steel, rigs, processing plants, pipelines, and contractors are funded. ADNOC is funding them.

This is where I want readers to slow down.

A production target is not a barrel.
A board-approved capex plan is not a completed plant.
A project award is not first oil.

But it is the start of the chain.

Money goes to EPC contractors. EPC means engineering, procurement, and construction. Those contractors order valves, compressors, turbines, pipe, steel, electrical systems, control systems, subsea equipment, and fabrication yard capacity. Operators then need crews, commissioning teams, logistics, spares, and uptime.

That is how capex becomes barrels. Not overnight… not imaginary either.

“When a national oil company funds the steel, the market should stop treating capacity as a footnote.”

The old story was quota discipline. The new story is execution discipline.

That is a major shift.

THE OIL STORY: The Draw Was Real. The Reason Matters.

EIA’s weekly petroleum report showed U.S. commercial crude inventories fell 6.23 million barrels for the week ended April 24.

That looks bullish at first glance.

Gasoline stocks fell 6.08 million barrels. Distillates, which include diesel and heating oil, fell 4.49 million barrels. Refinery utilization rose to 89.6%.

For newer readers, inventories are the market’s fuel tank. When the tank drains, the system has less cushion. Less cushion means price becomes more sensitive to refinery problems, export pulls, and demand spikes.

U.S. crude exports rose to 6.438 million barrels per day, the highest on record. That is a massive number. Exports were up about 1.64 million barrels per day week over week.

Translation: a big part of the crude draw came because barrels left the country.

That does not mean the draw is fake. It means it was export-led.

That is different from saying U.S. domestic demand suddenly exploded.

The draw was barrels leaving the tank and moving to buyers. The bullish question is whether that export pace continues. The bearish question is what happens when it becomes normal again...

That is the number I am watching.

Products were the tighter story.

Gasoline down 6.08 million barrels matters more to me than a crude chart that sold off on Friday. Gasoline is closer to the consumer. Diesel is closer to freight, industry, farms, mines, and logistics. When product stocks fall while refineries are already running near 90%, I do not call that loose.

I call that a market with less cushion than the headline suggests.

THE GAS AND LNG STORY: Cheap Gas, Expensive Exit Door.

Gas gave us the cleanest split of the week.

EIA reported U.S. working gas in storage at 2,142 Bcf for the week ended April 24. That was a 79 Bcf injection, leaving stocks 116 Bcf above last year and 153 Bcf above the five-year average.

For newer readers, Bcf means billion cubic feet. It is the storage unit for natural gas. If storage is above normal, that usually keeps pressure on prices.

And yet Henry Hub still finished the week around $2.780/MMBtu, up about 10%.

Why?

Because the U.S. has two gas markets living inside one country.

One market is domestic. It looks at storage, weather, power demand, and production.

The other is LNG linked… LNG means liquefied natural gas. Gas is cooled into liquid form so it can be loaded onto ships and sold overseas. Without LNG terminals, U.S. gas stays mostly trapped in North America. With LNG terminals, a molecule in Louisiana can compete for buyers in Europe or Asia.

U.S. LNG feedgas averaged a monthly record 18.8 Bcf/d in April.

Feedgas is the gas sent into LNG export plants.

That is the clean number.

It tells me export plants are pulling harder even while U.S. storage still looks comfortable. A cheap molecule is not useful if it cannot reach the buyer…

The Flux Kinetics Insider View: U.S. gas is cheap because storage is comfortable and some basins are constrained. U.S. LNG infrastructure is valuable because it owns the route out. The producer owns the molecule and the LNG chain owns the passport.

THE METALS STORY: Gold Paused. Copper And Lithium Still Matter.

Metals were not the main event this week, but I would not ignore them.

Gold stayed high, around $4,630/oz. But CFTC positioning showed managed money reduced some exposure. That does not mean gold is broken. It means some funds took risk off after a strong move.

For newer readers, CFTC positioning shows how different types of traders are positioned in futures markets. It is not perfect. It is not a timing tool by itself. But it helps me see whether big money is adding risk or cutting risk.

Copper stayed firm near $13,090/t on the LME 3M contract.

Copper matters because it is not just a chart. It is cables, transformers, power grids, industrial motors, electric vehicles, data centres, and ofshore platforms. When copper stays expensive, project budgets feel it.

That links directly back to ADNOC.

A $55 billion project award pipeline does not just pull oilfield services. It pulls steel, copper, electrical systems, control rooms, switchgear, compressors, pumps, valves, and fabrication capacity.

Energy capex becomes metals demand.

Not always on day one.
But eventually, through procurement.

My split is simple:

• Gold is the financial stress asset.

• Copper is the infrastructure asset.

• Lithium is the battery-chain asset.

They do not all move for the same reason.

The Flux Kinetics Trade:

Gold didn’t hold the 4,660$ level and went back to the “main key zone” at 4,500. Could this be a good time to re-enter?

Gold has sold off until the Fed day decision, as markets want to be cautious to price any changes. After that, a small recovery toward 4,650 has happened.

The open of the week will be interesting. If we close above 4,700, a good opportunity can be to enter a long trade toward Target 1.

If we come back to the main key zone at 4,500, then I would watch carefully if the zone rejected. If yes, then it can be a good second option to enter to play a long trend. If it broke down, then we can have a short activated toward 4,300.

POLICY AND CAPITAL: The SPR Chose The Curve.

The U.S. Department of Energy gave the market another important signal this week.

Reuters reported on April 30 that the DOE is seeking to loan companies up to 92.5 million barrels of crude from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. Companies would return the barrels later, with up to a 24% premium in extra barrels.

For newer readers, SPR means Strategic Petroleum Reserve. It is the U.S. emergency crude stockpile.

A normal purchase would mean the government buys crude and refills the reserve. This was different. This was an exchange loan.

DOE lends barrels now and Companies return more barrels later.

That matters because it weakens the idea that the government is a fixed-price buyer under the market today. It also shows how policy can use the curve…

That is why I prefer infrastructure over pure commodity beta in weeks like this.

A commodity ETF gives you price movement.
An infrastructure owner gives you the toll road.
A contractor gets paid when the steel goes into the ground.

That difference matters.

Wednesday: EIA crude and product data. ADP Employment + ISM Manufacturing PMI

Thursday: EIA gas storage. Initial Jobless Claims

Action Items

For Traders

I would treat Brent around $108 as the pivot.

A daily close above $110.50 opens a move toward $118. I would be wrong below $104.80.

For WTI, $100 is the line. A daily close below $99.50 opens $97. A daily close back above $104.50 brings $110 into play.

Keep it simple. Trade the close.
Do not trade the headline…

For Operators

If you depend on gasoline supply, secure volumes early. Product inventories fell hard this week. Do not wait for another refinery update.

If you are building power, grid, LNG, upstream, or downstream projects, revisit copper and electrical-equipment assumptions. Quotes can move faster than budgets.

For Investors

I would prefer infrastructure over pure commodity exposure. That means:

• LNG infrastructure owners

• Electrical equipment and grid suppliers

• Copper linked supply chains

• Gulf industrial suppliers tied to ADNOC’s local manufacturing push

I would be careful with weak balance sheets. High prices can hide poor execution for a while… they do not fix bad assets.

Buy the builders.
Be selective with the barrels. Trugarez!

On April 28, 2026, the UAE said it would leave OPEC and OPEC+, effective May 1. UAE Energy Minister Suhail Al Mazrouei told Reuters the decision followed a review of the country’s production policy and future energy strategy. He also said the move had not been discussed with any other country.

One of OPEC’s largest producers, third or fourth depending on the month and methodology, is leaving after nearly six decades inside the tent.

The headlines called it a shock…It was not. The capacity-quota gap inside the UAE has been widening for five years. ADNOC has been building capacity toward 5 million barrels a day while the UAE remained constrained by an effective OPEC+ limit in the roughly 3.2 to 3.5 million barrel a day range, depending on whether voluntary adjustments are included.

That leaves a capacity-quota gap of roughly 0.8 to 1.3 million barrels a day, barrels Abu Dhabi has invested to produce but could not fully monetise without breaching OPEC+ discipline. At today’s prices, that is real money walking out the door every quarter.

A short history of OPEC, in plain English

OPEC stands for the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries. It was created at the Baghdad Conference from September 10 to 14, 1960. Five countries signed the founding agreement: Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Venezuela. The headquarters has been in Vienna since 1965.

The reason for founding was straightforward. In the late 1950s, large Western oil companies, the so-called Seven Sisters, set the price of crude oil unilaterally. They cut the posted price twice in two years without consulting producing countries. The producers got together and decided they would coordinate their decisions instead of being price-takers.

Other producers joined over the decades. Qatar in 1961. Libya and Indonesia in 1962. The UAE, originally as Abu Dhabi, in 1967. Algeria in 1969. Nigeria in 1971. Several others followed.

At the time of the UAE announcement, OPEC had 12 member countries after Angola exited in January 2024 over a quota dispute. Once the UAE exit takes effect, that falls to 11. The bigger group, OPEC+, was created in December 2016, when OPEC members joined with 10 non-OPEC producers, most importantly Russia, to coordinate output cuts after the 2014 oil price collapse. OPEC+ together represents roughly 40-something percent of global oil supply on any given month.

That is the whole structure. A coordination club, with a Secretariat in Vienna, that meets several times a year and decides who pumps how much.

How the cartel actually works

OPEC and OPEC+ work through quotas. Each member is given a production ceiling expressed in barrels per day. Quotas are set against agreed reference baselines, political numbers that are supposed to reflect production capability, but often lag behind reality. Members vote to adjust quotas when prices or demand shift.

That is the theory. The practice is messier. Compliance is voluntary. There is no enforcement mechanism beyond political pressure and reputation. When a member’s real capacity grows faster than its baseline, the quota starts to feel like a tax. The country is sitting on barrels it cannot sell.

That is exactly what happened to the UAE.

I have watched cartels in three different commodities over fifteen years. The pattern repeats. Members who lost an internal argument about their fair share never forget. They build capacity quietly while the meeting minutes say everyone agreed.

Why the UAE walked

Recent reporting places the UAE’s effective OPEC+ limit in the 3.2 to 3.5 million barrel a day range, depending on whether voluntary adjustments are included... Reuters cited a quota of about 3.5 million barrels a day, while CNN cited an effective cap near 3.2 million. Per the BBC citing OPEC’s own figures, the UAE produced 2.9 million barrels a day in 2024.

UAE output was around 3.4 million barrels a day before the Hormuz disruption. Capacity is higher. EIA has cited ADNOC’s official production capacity around 4.5 million barrels a day, with other estimates in the 4.3 to 4.4 million barrel a day range.

The strategic target remains 5 million barrels a day by 2027.

That gap is the entire story. Spare capacity that cannot be produced generates no revenue.

“Our exit at this time is the right time for it, because it will have a minimum impact on the price.” said Suhail Al Mazrouei, UAE Energy Minister, to CNBC, April 28 2026

Here is the financial logic, in numbers anyone can run. If you think about it, freer production could generate roughly $50 billion or more in additional annual revenue once UAE capacity expansion completes.

Now look at the capital being deployed alongside that opportunity. ADNOC’s board approved a $150 billion capex plan for 2026 to 2030. The international investment arm, called XRG, was valued at $151 billion, up from roughly $80 billion at its launch a year earlier. That is the financial preparation of a company about to operate under different rules.

The capacity quota math

Strip the politics back. The UAE has been arguing for a higher baseline since 2021, when an OPEC+ meeting nearly collapsed publicly over Abu Dhabi’s refusal to extend cuts without recognition of its expanded capacity. The dispute was patched but it seems the grievance was not

.Five years of capacity build-out followed. ADNOC’s $150 billion capex was not a contingency plan for a possible exit. It was the construction of an industrial machine that needs to run above the quota ceiling to pay for itself.

OPEC+ share of global oil supply fell to 44% in March 2026, down from roughly 48% in February. That decline was driven primarily by current shipping constraints in the Gulf region, where vessel traffic has been disrupted, forcing production shut-ins and leaving Brent trading between $108 and $113 a barrel through the second half of April.

This is not purely a structural market-share loss, It does show how quickly OPEC+ control can shrink when physical flows break. May share will print lower again as one of the group’s largest producers walks.

Here is the catch: Quota freedom is worthless without flow path. The Habshan-Fujairah pipeline, which carries UAE crude past the Strait of Hormuz to the Gulf of Oman, has a capacity of 1.5 million barrels a day. That pipeline is the only route to market that does not depend on Hormuz traffic. Until shipping in the Strait become normal, UAE’s exportable upside is capped well below its production capacity.

The exit is sovereign. The export plumbing is not.

What changes from May 1

Three things shift the day the UAE leaves.

First, Saudi Arabia becomes the only credible swing producer inside the remaining OPEC core. Saudi Arabia carries roughly 3 million barrels a day of spare capacity, per The Middle East Insider’s April 22 estimate. That number used to be the cartel’s collective insurance. As of May 1 it is one country’s. Every barrel Riyadh withholds to defend price now subsidises UAE market share. That arithmetic does not survive long.

Second, the cartel’s enforcement credibility is now publicly testable. Angola left in January 2024 over a quota dispute. The cartel was unbothered. Angola produced about 1.1 million barrels a day. The UAE produces far more, with a capacity target of five. Iraq has a capacity-quota gap. Kuwait has one. Kazakhstan has one. None of them have ADNOC’s balance sheet, but every one of them now has a public template showing the cost of leaving is known and survivable.

Third, the shape of UAE itself changes. The country is no longer a quota-bound member of a producer cartel. With $150 billion in capex and $151 billion of international investment firepower in XRG, ADNOC starts to look more like a vertically integrated oil, gas, LNG and chemicals major, closer in shape to TotalEnergies than to a traditional Gulf national oil company. The first major XRG external acquisition after May 1 will tell the market which segment the UAE is buying into. My working assumption is LNG offtake or downstream chemicals in Asia, where most future demand growth lives.

What kills the thesis

The structural reading breaks if the UAE quietly returns to OPEC inside eighteen months, or if ADNOC’s 5 million barrel capacity claim slips materially past 2028, or if Saudi Arabia announces a coordinated framework reset that turns this from an unwind into a controlled restructuring. Each of those is observable. None is currently visible.

If UAE output remains materially below 3.5 million barrels a day after Hormuz normalises, the market will conclude that capacity, infrastructure, or reservoir management, not OPEC, was the binding constraint.

If Gulf shipping is back to normal by Q3 2026 and UAE production lifts toward 4 million barrels a day within ninety days, the thesis confirms in price action. Murban is already independently priced.

The signal to watch is whether the Murban-Brent spread loosens as Abu Dhabi tests higher volumes outside OPEC+ discipline. That is the first market signal worth watching.

What this means for you, in five steps

1. For consumers. More UAE barrels in the medium term, once Gulf shipping normalises, points to lower oil prices than a still-coordinated cartel would have produced. Not immediately. Over 12 to 24 months.

   • The constraint is the pipeline, not the politics

   • Brent normalization depends on Strait of Hormuz traffic, not the OPEC announcement

2. For investors in oil majors. Saudi Aramco’s role gets harder. ADNOC, soon less constrained, gets easier.

   • Watch the June 2026 OPEC meeting for signals on Saudi posture

   • If Iraq raises a quota grievance publicly, the pattern is alive

3. For investors in oil services and infrastructure. UAE upstream capex of $150 billion across 2026-2030 is direct addressable spend.

   • Drilling, completions, subsea, FPSO operators with Gulf exposure benefit

   • Pipeline expansion announcements are leading indicators

4. For traders. Start tracking the Murban-Brent spread weekly.

   • If Murban trades looser than Brent as UAE flexes, the cartel premium is being repriced in real time

5. For policy watchers. The cartel is not dead, but the architecture of price coordination has lost a load-bearing column.

   • Saudi spare capacity, around 3 million barrels a day, is now the single point of failure

   • Angola was a tremor, UAE is the fault line

Closing

The cartel is not dead. It is one column lighter. Saudi Arabia is now defending price discipline alone with finite spare capacity, while one of OPEC’s largest producers is free to pursue market share with $150 billion of capex behind it and a 5 million barrel a day target six years pulled forward.

By Q1 2027 the question will be whether OPEC can manage prices and starts being whether OPEC can manage its own membership. The institutional architecture of global oil price coordination, intact since that five-day meeting in Baghdad in 1960, is now a publicly testable variable rather than a working assumption.

The week paper bought a squeeze and the real market quietly sold the surplus.

Dear Executives, Traders & Investors, Brilliant minds and Friends

The week opened with a tanker called Al-Qaiyyah pulling into Sabine Pass, Texas, on Monday morning. It closed with Brent crude posting a 16% weekly gain that nobody actually wanted to hold beyond the next month. In between, the US government’s energy agency reported that American crude oil stockpiles went up by nearly 2 million barrels when the market expected them to go down. Tanker traffic through the world’s most important oil shipping route stayed near zero for most of the week. US natural gas storage filled up by 103 billion cubic feet, leaving stocks well above the five-year average. Brent closed Friday at $105.33. Natural gas at the main US hub sank to $2.61. Gold gave back to $4,714. Lithium quietly hit a three-month high in China.

Quick word for newer readers. Brent and WTI are the two main oil benchmarks. Brent is the global one. WTI is the US one. Henry Hub is where US natural gas gets priced. When I say “the curve,” I just mean the line of futures prices for delivery in different months. Front month is next-up delivery. Back of the curve is delivery a year or more out.

The story coming into the week was simple. Supply disruption equals higher oil prices for the rest of 2026. Stocks priced it. Hedge funds chased it. Retail bought every pullback. Then Wednesday’s inventory report landed and the script started cracking. Crude built when it was supposed to draw. Refineries ran a touch slower. The big US oil hub barely moved.

Here is what I think almost everyone missed this week. Brent ran 16% on a curve that is already telling you the back end does not believe the front. Prices for delivery in late 2027 barely moved. That is not a long-term shortage. That is a short-term bottleneck with an expiration date.

This Week’s Settle

Brent (June ‘26): $100, sharply higher, +16% on the week, as Gulf tanker traffic stayed near zero for most of the week and prices repriced for cargoes that simply could not get out of the region.

WTI (June ‘26): $96, sharply higher, +13% on the week, lagging Brent on a wider gap as US crude stockpiles built nearly 2 million barrels against an expected draw.

Henry Hub (May ‘26): $2.61/MMBtu, sharply lower, off roughly 11% on the week, as the storage report showed a heavy injection that pushed gas inventories well above seasonal norms even with Golden Pass starting to pull gas for export.

Gold (June ‘26): $4,700 settle, fractionally softer, down roughly 1% on the week, as a stronger dollar and softer safe-haven buying drained the panic premium that had built earlier in April. FED rate decision ahead.

Silver (spot): $75, flat to fractionally higher, holding the week’s range as industrial demand from solar and grid build kept the floor intact while gold’s pullback capped the upside.

Lithium carbonate (battery grade, China): 173,000 yuan per tonne (~$23,800/tonne), higher, +13.4% on the month and at a three-month peak, as Chinese battery makers pulled forward summer buying on tighter raw material supply and fresh EV subsidy guidance.

THE OIL AND CURVE STORY

Brent ran 16% on the week. WTI ran 13%. The gap between the two widened. None of that is the real story I am tracking. The story is what the rest of the curve did while the front month was throwing a parade.

A simple way to read the curve.

When today’s price is much higher than the price one or two years out, the market is telling you “right now is tight, but I expect things to normalise.”

Traders call that backwardation. When today’s price is lower than the future, that is contango, and it means today is well-supplied.

Front-month Brent at $105 with December ‘27 trading near $74 is not a normal market. It is a curve telling me the physical bottleneck is real, but it is also telling me that the moment cargoes start moving again, the back end is where the truth lives. I saw heavy producer hedging in the 2027 strip this week.

Refiners locked in their margins where they could. The smart money is not buying the spike. The smart money is selling it forward.

Then Wednesday hit. The US energy agency reported commercial crude stocks of 465.7 million barrels for the week ending April 17, a build of nearly 2 million versus a consensus draw of 1.2 million. Refinery activity slipped slightly. Imports stayed sticky. The market is drowning in domestic supply.

The Flux Kinetics Number: nearly 2 million barrels. That is the print that contradicts every “squeeze” headline you read this week… with cargoes throttled overseas and Brent at $105, US tanks should have been bleeding.

They built. The split is this. The Atlantic side of the world is short barrels on water. The US Gulf is long crude it cannot place fast enough into a refining system still working through spring maintenance.

The Baker Hughes rig count showed US drillers added one rig on Friday, bringing the total to 544. Oil rigs actually dropped by three to 407. Gas rigs picked up four. The drilling response to $96 WTI is not “drill baby drill.” It is “we already learned that lesson in 2014 and again in 2020.”

THE LNG AND GOLDEN PASS STORY

Monday at Sabine Pass, the Al-Qaiyyah pulled alongside Berth 1 at Golden Pass. Wednesday it loaded. Thursday it left. The 10th US LNG export terminal is now in commercial service, eight years after the project was approved, after a contractor went bankrupt and nearly killed the project, after Zachry Holdings filed Chapter 11 in 2024 and Bechtel had to be parachuted in to finish the job.

For readers new to LNG, natural gas gets cooled to liquid at -160 degrees C so it can be loaded onto specialised ships and sent across the ocean. That is what makes Henry Hub gas in Texas useful to a buyer in Tokyo or Madrid. Train 1 at Golden Pass can produce around 5.2 million tonnes per year, roughly 700 million cubic feet of gas per day once at full ramp. Train 2 is targeting startup later this year. Train 3 in early 2027. At full build, Golden Pass will pull about 2.4 billion cubic feet of US gas out of the country every single day.

Henry Hub closed Friday at $2.61. Storage built 103 billion cubic feet. Stocks now sit well above the five-year average. This is the gap I keep coming back to. Domestic gas is in surplus. Export capacity is coming online. The two facts cannot coexist for long.

The Flux Kinetics Insider View. I spoke with two midstream operators on the Gulf Coast this week. Both confirmed that pipeline volumes flowing into Sabine Pass climbed steadily through April. Both expect the price gap between US gas and Asian gas to narrow on the front of the curve, then widen on the back as Train 2 starts up in Q3. Equities figured this out in 2024. The futures contract is just starting to price it.

THE METALS AND CRITICAL MINERALS STORY

Gold faded into Friday’s close. Spot near $4,719, June futures at $4,722.30. The dollar firmed. The panic bid that ran gold from $4,200 to nearly $4,800 earlier in April leaked out as the safe-haven premium compressed. Silver held $75 through choppy two-way action. The gold-to-silver ratio sits near 62, well below the decade average of 80, telling me industrial silver demand from solar panels and electronics is doing real structural work that pure monetary gold is not.

Lithium is the story almost no one is writing about this week. Battery-grade lithium carbonate in China hit 173,000 yuan per tonne, a three-month high, up 13.4% in 30 days, up 147% from this time last year. The driver is not headline EV sales. It is Chinese battery makers buying ahead of expected tightness in spodumene (the rock lithium gets mined from), where two mid-tier Australian producers cut their output guidance this month… plus a quiet but real shift in grid storage orders out of Saudi Arabia and Texas.

I spoke with two procurement heads at major battery cell manufacturers this week. Both said the same thing in different words. Spot prices no longer set the marginal cost. Long-term contracts do, they are repricing fast.

As I scenario-predicted last week, for gold, we came back to retest the 4,700 support zone, which can be an entry price as highlighted previously and while it holds. Gold now sits in a short term corrective phase.

This week, the most important information related to gold is the Fed rate-cut decision, which will influence the dollar direction, therefore the gold one...

The play → I am watching is a long re-entry only on an hourly close back above $4,710, targeting $4,900, with invalidation at a daily close below $4,660. That is roughly 3:1 RR.

I would recommend not keeping any position on Wednesday, when the Fed will announce their decision, as the market will be extremely volatile on this day. Be safe, and always remember “capital to be protected as first”

CHOKEPOINTS AND CAPITAL FLOWS

The Gulf shipping corridor is the chokepoint of the year, and this week it was the chokepoint of the week. Three tanker passes in twenty-four hours on Tuesday. A brief reopening on Saturday. Closure again the following day. Baker Hughes told its earnings call on Thursday that its 2026 financial guidance now assumes the route does not fully reopen until the second half of 2026. That is a service-company CFO telling you the rerouting math is not a one-week problem. It is a six-month problem at minimum.

Roughly 17 million barrels per day of crude moves through this corridor in normal times. The physical alternatives are limited. The East-West pipeline from Saudi Arabia to the Red Sea moves about 5 million barrels per day, only partially used. The Habshan-Fujairah pipeline from the UAE adds another 1.5 million barrels per day.

That leaves roughly 10 million barrels per day with no bypass.

Capital is moving to the bypass-adjacent. Saudi Aramco was reportedly accelerating East-West pipeline expansion engineering this week. UAE-flagged tankers were repositioned to load at Fujairah. Floating storage off Singapore climbed.

The split is this. The paper market is buying the squeeze on Brent. The physical market is buying pipeline expansion engineering, port slot reservations, and West African and Brazilian crude. Don’t confuse the freight spike with the cycle.

“If you trade the headline, you feed the pros. If you trade the pipe, you front-run them.”

WEEK AHEAD: WHAT TO WATCH

Wednesday, April 29: FED Rate Decision + US weekly oil inventory report. The market is now expecting a draw of around 800 thousand barrels after this week’s surprise build. Would the FED cut its rate ?

Thursday, April 30: US weekly natural gas storage report. I am watching for an injection in the 90 to 105 billion cubic feet range.

Sunday, May 3: OPEC+ ministerial meeting. Compliance review and the May quota implementation. I will be watching for any “softening in language.”"

The Small Modular Reactor (SMR) industry has spent eighteen months converting hyper scaler balance sheets into nameplate announcements. Microsoft restarted Three Mile Island via Constellation for sixteen billion dollars. Amazon committed more than twenty billion to its Susquehanna campus plus equity in X-energy. Google took 500 megawatts of Kairos Power on paper for post-2030 delivery. Meta’s January 9 announcement bundled Vistra, Oklo, and TerraPower into a 6.6 GW two-decade frame. Add it all up and the hyper scaler nuclear book exceeds 15 GW of stated commitment…

Here is the catch. Roughly 9 GW of that book is what matters most to the SMR thesis specifically, and none of it has a running reactor. The comfortable story says capital has broken the nuclear logjam. The plumbing says capital has only rented optionality.

This piece covers the 2028-2032 window, because that is when paper PPAs either become physical electrons or become write-downs.

The NuScale number won’t go away

NuScale Company’s overnight construction cost landed at $20,139 per kilowatt in its final 2023 estimate. That is within a rounding error of Vogtle, the large-reactor project in Waynesboro whose cost overruns the SMR industry was explicitly founded to escape. The target power price reached $89 per megawatt-hour with full federal subsidies, roughly $119 without. The Carbon Free Power Project was cancelled in November 2023…

That was the data point. The explanation is worse.

UAMPS, main costumer of this NuScal project, attributed the 75% construction cost escalation, from $5.3 billion to $9.3 billion, to commodity inflation in the supply chain. Fabricated steel plate rose 54% between 2021 and 2023. Carbon steel piping rose 106%. Copper wire and cable rose 32%. Interest rate assumptions added approximately 200 basis points to the project’s financing stack. None of those inputs have reset to 2020 levels. Steel is still elevated. Financing costs are elevated. The NRC regulatory pathway is marginally faster than 2023 but not dramatically so.

Watch how physicist Sabine Hossenfelder explains why small reactors still face the same cost problem that killed NuScale:

The industry response has been to argue that NuScale was first-of-a-kind, undersized at 462 MW post-downsizing, and architecturally inferior to newer designs. There is truth in each point.

An other major company developping SMR, Holtec, has publicly-cited SMR-300 construction cost range is $12-15 million per megawatt, which is $12,000 to $15,000 per kilowatt, 25% to 40% below NuScale’s final number: That is progress.

However, progress from a twenty-thousand-dollar kilowatt is not the same as proof of a four-thousand-dollar kilowatt. The IEA’s 2040 cost-parity target for US and European SMRs is $4,500/kW. That requires a 70-80% cost reduction from Holtec’s best-case directional number, in an environment where the structural steel supply chain remains tight and nuclear-grade fabrication capacity is capacity-constrained globally.

The industry call on that trajectory is possible. The ten-year operating history says unlikely.

Where the capital is actually committed

The hyperscaler deals break into two categories, and the press coverage rarely separates them.

The first category is existing operating nuclear capacity. Microsoft’s Three Mile Island restart. Meta’s 2.2 GW purchase from Vistra’s Ohio plants, plus 433 MW of incremental plant upgrades. Google’s NextEra Duane Arnold reopening discussions. Amazon’s Susquehanna direct campus arrangement. These are near-term, commercially proven, and genuinely consequential for grid economics in PJM and MISO U.S regions.

The second category is SMR-specific. Meta-Oklo for up to 1.2 GW with a 2030 first-reactor target. Meta-TerraPower for up to 2.6 GW across eight Natrium reactors with a 2032 first-power target. Google-Kairos for 500 MW post-2030. Amazon-X-energy, undisclosed final GW, post-2030.

Read together, these SMR-specific commitments total roughly 5-7 GW of announced hyperscaler capacity scheduled for 2030-2035 first power. None of the reactors have been built anywhere in the world on a commercial basis as of April 2026. TerraPower’s Natrium cleared its final NRC safety evaluation in December 2025 and received a construction permit in Wyoming in March 2026. That is the first commercial advanced-reactor construction permit issued in years and a genuine milestone. Oklo broke ground in September 2025 on a DOE Reactor Pilot Program, not a commercial unit.

The PPAs themselves are structured with deliberate looseness. Meta’s director of global energy, Urvi Parekh, told the Wall Street Journal the timelines are “challenging” and the agreements reflect willingness to be “bold.” Translation: these are optionality contracts, not take-or-pay pipeline commitments.

This is not a dig at the hyperscalers. It is how sophisticated counterparties with 12-figure cash flows buy 6-year forward energy optionality. They are not pretending otherwise. The sell-side coverage is.

The HALEU bottleneck in plain English

Approximately 90% of US advanced reactor designs run on HALEU (high-assay low-enriched uranium) enriched to between 10% and 19.75%, compared to 3-5% for conventional reactor fuel. HALEU enables the compact reactor designs, longer refueling cycles, and smaller footprints that make SMRs commercially interesting in the first place.

That is a 49 metric ton gap, and it does not close by writing checks.

The DOE announced a $2.7 billion nuclear fuel award in February 2026. Centrus, General Matter, and Orano Federal Services each received $900 million . The funding is directionally right. The physics is uncooperative. A new centrifuge cascade takes 3-5 years to construct, commission, and ramp. Regulatory approvals for HALEU fabrication facilities are more stringent than for conventional fuel. Each reactor design may require its own dedicated fuel fabrication plant.

Here is the part that is not in the bull-case decks. The US currently imports 71.7% of its enriched uranium. Russia supplies 24-27% of that total . The Prohibiting Russian Uranium Imports Act banned Russian LEU imports in May 2024 with waivers allowed through 2028. If waivers expire on schedule and domestic capacity has not filled the gap, the binding constraint on SMR deployment between 2028 and 2030 is fuel, not reactors.

That is a very bad sign for any investor who bought Oklo stock at today's highly inflated prices... just a thought.

The LEU+ pivot nobody is pricing

Here is the signal hidden in the filings.

A quieter industry is moving in parallel. Holtec’s SMR-300, GE Hitachi’s BWRX-300, Westinghouse’s AP300, and Aalo Atomics’ commercial reactor all use LEU+, uranium enriched between 5% and 10%, a middle tier that leverages existing centrifuge infrastructure at Urenco’s Eunice, New Mexico facility.

Urenco USA received NRC authorisation for LEU+ production in September 2025 and expects to reach commercial production by mid-2026.

Westinghouse told Reuters Events that LEU+ reactors will have a supply-chain advantage “because the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has already provided approval for LEU+ fuel designs, manufacturing and transportation for some enrichers and fuel vendors.” That is a consequential sentence. It means the regulatory tail risk that overhangs HALEU is absent for LEU+.

The implication is that the SMR industry is bifurcating. HALEU-dependent designs, Oklo, TerraPower Natrium, X-energy, face a genuine fuel-supply constraint through at least 2029. LEU+ designs face a far smaller fuel-supply constraint and a faster regulatory pathway for the fuel itself.

The hyperscaler PPA book does not distinguish between these categories. The physical delivery schedules will.

If you are an investor, operator, or corporate buyer with capital at risk in this space, here are five diagnostics to implement taking into account current world situation:

1. Audit your fuel assumption. Pull the technical data sheet on any SMR you are exposed to. Confirm whether it runs on LEU, LEU+, or HALEU. If HALEU, read Centrus Energy’s most recent production capacity disclosure and compare to the reactor’s first-core requirement. If the first-core HALEU requirement exceeds Centrus’s published annualized capacity, you have a 2028-2030 fuel timing risk that is not in the sell-side model.

2. Separate paper PPAs from construction commitments. For any hyperscaler-nuclear deal you are trading, distinguish the GW secured against existing operating plants versus the GW contingent on SMRs reaching first power. If the SMR-contingent portion exceeds 60% of the announced total, the deal is mostly optionality.

3. Check the NRC construction permit status. As of April 2026, TerraPower’s Natrium in Kemmerer, Wyoming is the only commercial advanced-reactor construction permit in hand. Others are in queue. Treat permit-in-hand vs permit-pending as a bright-line risk tier.

4. Stress-test the commodity input deck. If your SMR financial model assumes 2020 steel prices or pre-2022 financing costs, it is not a model, it is a marketing document. Rebuild with current fabricated steel plate and carbon steel piping indices, plus 200 basis points of financing risk premium.

5. Track the LEU+ Urenco ramp as your tell. Urenco USA’s Eunice facility mid-2026 commercial production milestone is the single highest-signal deployment tell for the SMR industry between now and end-of-year. If it slips, LEU+ pivots slip with it and the bifurcation thesis weakens.

The close

Meta signed for 6.6 GW in January. Oklo hasn’t poured concrete. Those two facts will still be true in 2027, and probably in 2028. By 2029, the market will know which SMR designs actually ship fuel and which ones ship press releases.

The future hook runs like this. If Urenco USA hits commercial LEU+ production by mid-2026 and Holtec or GE Hitachi receives its first NRC construction permit by end-2027, the LEU+ cohort takes the commercial lead and the hyperscaler PPA book starts repricing around fuel availability rather than reactor nameplate. If either milestone slips more than 12 months, the entire SMR deployment timeline pushes to 2033+, and the Meta-Oklo-TerraPower paper capacity becomes accounting write-down risk for counterparty investors, not the hyperscalers themselves.

The thesis breaks if Centrus or General Matter hit 20+ MT/year HALEU capacity by 2028 on budget, or if a new enrichment technology clears commercial throughput inside 24 months. Neither is impossible. Both require that nuclear fuel physics finally cooperate with announcement cycles, which is not how it usually goes.

A funny thing happens when every trader on the planet is staring at the same chart. The majority misses the pipe behind it. On Tuesday, the IEA did something it has not done since lockdowns. It told the world that 2026 will be a year of shrinking oil demand. On Wednesday, the EIA told the world that U.S. crude stocks fell for the first time in almost two months. Put those two sentences next to each other and they should cancel out. Less demand, smaller tanks. One of those is wrong.

Neither is wrong. That is the interesting part.

This Week’s Settle:

The IEA cut its 2026 demand forecast by 810,000 barrels per day in a single revision. That is the largest one-month cut the agency has printed outside of 2020, and it flips the year from plus 730,000 bpd of growth to minus 80,000 bpd of contraction. Jet fuel in Asia is softer. Gasoline in Europe is softer. Industrial diesel in China is the softest of all. Whatever the mix, the direction is one way.

Then the EIA print landed. Commercial crude stocks fell 913,000 barrels to 463.8 million, against a consensus build of 200,000. Gasoline drew 6.3 million. Distillates drew 3.1 million and are still sitting below the five-year average. The draw was not about Americans suddenly burning more fuel. It was about barrels leaving the country. Exports jumped. Gulf Coast terminals loaded at full tilt. The oil did not disappear, it got on a boat.

In simple terms: the world is asking for less oil overall, but the specific oil sitting in Cushing is finally moving to the buyers who actually want it. That distinction is the whole story this week.

• Oil: Brent closed Friday at $90.38, down roughly 5% on the week. WTI settled at $82.59. U.S. crude inventories drew 913,000 barrels, breaking a seven-week build streak.

• Natural Gas: Henry Hub May futures printed $2.67 at Friday’s close, still pinned below $3. Working gas in storage reached 1,970 Bcf on April 10, now 126 Bcf above the same week last year.

• Gold: Ended near $4,879 per ounce after tagging $4,913 intraday Friday. The metal held $4,800 on three separate retests.

• Silver: Settled around $81.84 after a 5.7% single-session rip midweek. J.P. Morgan lifted its 2026 average forecast to $81.

• Lithium: Battery-grade carbonate spot in China reached $24,086 per metric ton on SMM data, roughly double the December low.

These numbers set gasoline at the pump, electricity bills, the cost of every solar module leaving Chinese ports, and the price of every cell going into an EV this summer.

The Insider View:

Now the curve, because this is where the real confession lives. Brent prompt-to-deferred backwardation compressed from $22 at the peak to about $8 by Friday’s close. That is not normalisation, that is capitulation. Traders who were pricing an acute shortage three weeks ago are now pricing a second-half surplus. The speed of that shift is what makes me cautious. Markets that re price this fast usually overshoot in both directions, and the next leg is not obvious.

The refiners are the quiet tell. U.S. 3-2-1 crack spreads stayed above $40 even as crude dropped, which is why Gulf Coast utilisation climbed past 90%. Europe is the photo negative. Northwest European hydro skimming margins turned negative the week of April 6, averaging minus $6.45 per barrel on IEA numbers. Houston is running hot on discounted feedstock. Rotterdam is losing money on every barrel it cracks. That split will be loud in the Q1 earnings calls starting next week, and it is going to dictate how the second quarter gets priced. Keep an eye on Valero, Marathon Petroleum, and Phillips 66. Keep the other eye on TotalEnergies’ refining segment, which is where the pain will surface first on the European side.

Silver’s Two Masters:

Last week I flagged silver as the metal that cannot serve two masters. This week the market made the case for me, then ignored it.

On Wednesday silver ripped 5.7% in a single session and pushed above $79. Gold barely moved on the same day. That almost never happens. Silver usually leans on gold the way a younger sibling leans on the older one. This time it walked off on its own.

The driver is not monetary. It is industrial, and the supply side is broken. The Silver Institute is now flagging a sixth consecutive annual deficit, with total demand outrunning mine supply by roughly 180 million ounces in 2026. Photovoltaic fabrication alone is on track to absorb 232 million ounces, up from 193 million two years ago. Every gigawatt of new solar capacity installed needs around 10 tonnes of silver paste. China added 277 GW last year. India is aiming for 50 GW this year. The U.S. Inflation Reduction Act pipeline adds another 40 GW. The arithmetic does not close, and it has not closed for six years running.

The supply side is the part nobody discusses at dinner parties. Roughly 70% of mined silver comes as a by-product of copper, zinc, and lead operations. That means silver supply is hostage to copper and zinc capex decisions, which are not getting made fast enough. Fresnillo in Mexico is guiding production lower this year. Pan American Silver has issues at La Colorada. Hochschild is running flat. Primary silver miners are a rounding error in global output, which is why the market cannot simply drill its way out.

So what happens when a metal with a structural deficit also gets a monetary bid? You get what we saw this week. The gold-silver ratio compressed from 63 to 60 in five trading days, the sharpest weekly move in over a year. Silver is no longer gold’s smaller cousin. It is a supply-constrained industrial metal with a precious-metal option bolted on top. When both masters pull the same way, the move is violent. This week they pulled together, and $80 stopped being a ceiling.

Lithium deserves one more line because the pattern rhymes. Carbonate prices have nearly doubled from the December low. Chinese converters are running tight on feedstock. The Australian spodumene bid is back for the first time in two years. This is not sentiment, it is inventory, and it matters for every battery cell quoted after May.

The Investor’s Perspective:

The three-week gap between paper prices and physical barrels closed this week, and it closed in the direction almost nobody was positioned for. Demand is softening. Tanks are starting to drain. Both of those are bearish flat price and both are bullish for the refiners sitting on the right side of the crack. That is an unusual setup, and it rewards precision.

For equity exposure, the trade map has rotated. U.S. refiners with complex coking capacity are winning on the crack spread. European simple refiners are bleeding. Midstream operators with locked LNG off take are insulated from the flat price entirely. The upstream names that ran hardest on the supply scare three weeks ago are now the most exposed to mean reversion. Quality of asset base matters again, and it will matter more each week the curve keeps flattening.

For those watching energy markets from further out, the takeaway is simple. Demand is not infinite, inventories do not build forever, and silver does not always follow gold. This week all three of those rules reasserted themselves at the same time, which is rare enough to write down.

Silver hit a record near 99 dollars an ounce earlier this year. It has pulled back and now trades around 79 dollars. Many analysts say it just followed gold higher in 2025 and is cooling off now. They point to solar makers switching to copper and say the industrial story is fading. They tell people to buy silver only if they want gold with extra volatility.

China produces up to 70 percent of the world’s refined silver. On January 1, Beijing replaced the old quota system with a strict export licensing regime. Only 44 approved companies can export refined silver now. This move treats silver like a strategic material similar to rare earths. You do not need a full ban to restrict supply. A licensing desk and a short list of names is enough.

The global silver market has run a structural deficit since 2021. 2026 will be the sixth straight year of shortfall with a gap of 67 million ounces. That number sounds small next to total supply of roughly 1.05 billion ounces. It is not small.

From 2021 through 2025 the market pulled more than 750 million ounces from above ground inventories. That is nearly one full year of all silver mined worldwide. Those stocks are the buffer that keeps prices from swinging wildly. The buffer is shrinking fast.

Six years of deficits do not create a sudden shortage. They show the shortage was already building.

• Mine production is expected to grow just 1 percent in 2026.

• Recycling helps but will not close the gap.

• New primary silver mines take five to ten years to start up.

The supply response to higher prices will take time. The United States added silver to its critical minerals list in late 2025. Building new refining capacity outside China will take years and a lot of capital. The bottleneck is already in place.

Industrial demand makes up about 59 percent of total silver use. The solar sector alone consumed roughly 187 million ounces in 2025 data. Silver paste carries electricity across solar cells and has become a big cost item.

Solar companies want to switch to copper to cut costs. Chinese firms like LONGi and Jinko are pushing hard on this. If it works they will save billions. The switch is not easy.

• Copper oxidises fast.

• Long-term reliability data for 25-year warranties is still limited.

• Solar silver use may drop some but demand from data centers, EVs and power infrastructure keeps growing.

Investment buying is rising too. Physical bar and coin demand is forecast to hit 227 million ounces this year. Industry and investors are competing for the same limited supply of refined silver.

The pressure shows up on the COMEX. Registered silver for immediate delivery has dropped sharply. Delivery requests are higher than normal.

In February, Wheaton Precious Metals signed a 4.3 billion dollar streaming deal with BHP for silver from a mine in Peru. Filings show it settles in metals credits. There is no physical delivery of bars to Wheaton. Even big players rely on paper structures. This makes the real physical limit at Chinese refiners even more important. Paper works until someone actually needs the bars.

Investors should look past the price screen, must map their exposure to separate the monetary safe-haven from the industrial reality.

If you hold physical bullion, physical-backed ETFs, or primary silver miners, you are playing the monetary narrative and stand to benefit from the supply squeeze.

If you own solar panel makers, grid hardware firms, or specialty chemical fabricators, you are exposed to the industrial reality. You are holding the companies that must pay whatever the refining gatekeepers demand to keep their assembly lines running. One side of your portfolio profits from the bottleneck. The other side pays for it. Know which one you own.

Watch these two signals :

• The gold to silver ratio. A reading below 50 means silver is being valued as money.

• Also track COMEX registered inventory. A drop below 70 million ounces is a red flag.

Silver is no longer just a volatile version of gold. It is a physical market pulled in two directions by investment demand and industrial need. The buffer is 750 million ounces thinner than five years ago. The main refining gate sits under government control that now lists silver as strategic.

This is a supply chain limit forming right now. It matters for solar costs and the speed of the energy shift.

Vital Nitrogen nutrients and 136 million barrels of oil are still stuck, and that changes everything.

While the world watched oil prices crash this week, a much quieter,and potentially more devastating, crisis is brewing for global agriculture. The Strait of Hormuz isn’t just an energy chokepoint, its dictates the flow of roughly 30% of the world’s seaborne fertiliser(Qatar, Saudi, Iran). Right now, farmers desperately need nitrogen-based nutrients for planting season, but prices have already jumped sharply. Urea alone is up 75% from last year.

Here is the part most people missed: even with a two-week truce on paper, almost nothing is actually moving. Only one non-Iranian tanker crossed the Strait all week. Insurance companies have not given the green light for normal shipping, leaving essential agricultural inputs, along with an estimated 136 million barrels of oil and fuel products, physically trapped in the Persian Gulf.

The truce gave financial markets hope, sending paper energy prices plummeting. Brent crude oil settled at $95.20 per barrel on Friday, down almost 13% for the week, and WTI closed at $96.57. But the real-world physical market has not caught up yet, and sustained bottlenecks for these trapped fertilisers will inevitably lead to higher global food prices.

Major banks like Goldman Sachs cut their price forecasts sharply. At the same time, U.S. oil storage tanks are filling up faster than expected. The government reported that commercial crude inventories rose by 3.1 million barrels to 464.7 million barrels, the seventh week in a row of increases. That is now 2% above the normal level for this time of year.

This Week’s Settle:

• Oil: Brent ended at $95.20. Only one non-Iranian tanker got through the blocked shipping lane, leaving 136 million barrels stranded.

• Natural Gas: The main U.S. price (Henry Hub) fell to around $2.65. Meanwhile, the U.S. set a new record exporting 11.7 million tons of LNG in March.

• Gold: Ended near $4,749 per ounce after hitting almost $4,800 earlier in the week. It tested the $4,700 support level three times and held.

• Silver: Settled around $76.22 per ounce.

• Lithium: The vital battery metal saw prices fall slightly to about $20,100 per tonne.

These numbers dictate everything from gasoline prices and heating bills to food costs and the price of goods relying on industrial metals

Oil for delivery soon is trading at a massive premium to oil for later in the year, a gap of about $14 to $22 on Brent and WTI. This structure usually indicates the market believes there is an immediate, severe shortage.

The type of oil is the crucial missing detail. The crude normally shipped through the Strait of Hormuz is heavier and sour, meaning it contains more sulfur. Many refineries across Europe and Asia are specifically built to process this exact grade. The oil currently building up in U.S. storage is lighter and sweeter. It is essentially the wrong fuel for their engines.

The Flux Kinetics Number: 136 million barrels.

That is the volume of oil and fuel still waiting behind the Strait. Until that number starts dropping, the lower prices flashing on trading screens will remain highly disconnected from physical reality.

The Strait of Hormuz Flow Map below illustrates how one narrow waterway dictates this flow. With agricultural impacts already making headlines, the energy shortage is running on a parallel track. Asia gets 80% of its oil from this exact route, meaning the physical freeze happening right now is setting the stage for massive supply chain disruptions globally.

The Insider View:

The U.S. has stepped into the role of the world’s swing supplier of natural gas through LNG exports, helping to fill gaps caused by damage in Qatar and the Hormuz disruption. However, pipeline capacity, not just export terminals, remains the real limiting factor.

U.S. LNG exports hit a record 11.7 million metric tons in March. That is 17.7% above February’s 9.94 million tons. The largest single month in U.S. history. Europe absorbed 7.49 million tons, roughly 64% of total U.S. shipments. The premium between European TTF and Henry Hub is so wide that every operational train in Louisiana and Texas is running at or above nameplate capacity.

Plaquemines LNG is the facility underneath the headline. Venture Global received DOE authorisation in March for a 13% increase in exports, adding 0.45 Bcf/d to its already operational capacity

LNG export capacity is projected to more than double between 2024 and 2028, with exports expected to rise from 11.9 Bcf/d to 21.5 Bcf/d by 2030. The FID wave is real. The pipe to feed it remains the constraint.

Gold stayed strong and held above $4,700 despite the drop in oil. Central banks and Asian buyers continued to purchase on dips. Silver is currently playing two roles, acting as both a precious metal and a vital industrial component for solar panels and electronics.

My Flux Kinetics Trade:

I am treading carefully this week because geopolitical talks could swing prices wildly in either direction. With the next 10 days of negotiations, we might think that the market recovered and it will be calm, but we still have to be cautious.

I entered a long position in gold at $4,755 (futures contract), with a stop loss below $4,690 and a target of $4,950.

I entered this position because the short correction movement was still bullish; we didn’t make any lower low. Fortunately, we closed again up at $4,800 and we hold the $4700.

If you are not into any trade, and we break strongly above $4850, a momentum trade can be played toward the same target given previously at $4950.

If you want to be more patient, then I would buy a deep at $4600 with the stop loss at five $4500.

The Week Ahead:

• April 14: The IEA releases its new report on global oil supply losses.

• April 15: The next U.S. inventory report drops, reflecting the first full week after the truce news.

• Strait Traffic: If several non-Iranian tankers start moving smoothly by mid-week, prices could fall further toward $90. If traffic stays frozen, $95 will likely hold as a floor, and we could retest the $100 mark.

The Investor’s Perspective

The gap between the $95 oil on your screen and the closed shipping lanes in reality is where the actual market story lives. Those looking for exposure might consider companies operating pipelines, storage facilities, or LNG terminals rather than taking direct positions on the price of crude. Energy infrastructure historically outperforms when physical delivery markets are chaotic.

Here is what almost everyone misses. A Hormuz blockage is not just an energy shock. It is an immediate caloric crisis. The soil does not care about paper contracts. It requires physical chemistry on a fixed calendar. Miss the window and the harvest shrinks. There is no makeup exam.

The Chemistry of the Gulf

Middle Eastern nations turn cheap domestic natural gas into anhydrous ammonia. They upgrade that ammonia into urea. They load it onto dry bulk vessels and ship it through the Strait of Hormuz. One-third of all seaborne fertilizer trade passes through this single waterway, per the Carnegie Endowment (March 2026). For urea alone, the number is sharper: 21% of globally traded urea, roughly 10.6 million metric tonnes per annum, comes from Gulf exporters directly exposed to a Hormuz closure. That is per Rystad Energy’s 2025 trade mapping, published via OilPrice.com on March 31, 2026. The top three are Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the UAE.

Natural gas accounts for 70 to 80% of ammonia production costs. The Gulf producers sit at the bottom of the global cost curve because their feedstock is the cheapest in the world. When you block the strait, you do not just delay shipments. You remove the baseline pricing anchor for global nitrogen.

Here is the part that makes it permanent until it reopens. The region’s ammonia and urea plants are physically plumbed to Gulf-side export terminals. There are no overland rail systems capable of moving millions of tonnes of granular urea to the Red Sea. Saudi Arabia can reroute crude oil through its Yanbu terminal on the Red Sea coast, and exports there have already surged to 4.6 million barrels per day. Fertilizer does not work that way. The processing plants, storage silos, and deepwater loading infrastructure are all east-facing. The urea is trapped.

The storage fill up within days once the export terminals choke. Plant operators must throttle back production or shut down entirely. India has already lost roughly 800,000 tonnes of its normal 2.6 million tonne monthly urea production because the government restricted industrial gas supply to the 70-75% range to conserve LNG stockpiles.

The Importer Squeeze

Follow the pipe. The ships leaving the Gulf head primarily to two places: India and Brazil. These are the two largest agricultural basins on earth that depend on imported nitrogen, and both are staring at a fixed planting calendar that does not negotiate.

Start with the numbers. India was the world’s single largest urea importer in 2025, bringing in 10.2 million metric tonnes. More than 41% of that was sourced from countries whose exports transit the Strait of Hormuz. India also sources close to 80% of its ammonia and sulfur imports from the Gulf region. Ammonia is the building block. Sulfur is used to produce phosphate fertilizers. Both are now bottlenecked.

The calendar is the weapon. India’s kharif season, the main monsoon planting window for rice, cotton, and pulses, requires urea to be in warehouses by June. The Indian government expects total kharif fertilizer demand of 39 million tonnes. Current stocks are 18 million tonnes. The gap is 21 million tonnes. The government has already pulled forward global tenders, ordering 13.5 lakh tonnes (1.35 million tonnes) of urea by mid-February and scrambling to source replacements from Russia, Belarus, and Morocco. However, the physical distance dictates the delay. You cannot reroute millions of tonnes from the Atlantic basin without paying current extreme freight premiums and waiting weeks for vessels to reposition.

Now look at the price. Urea FOB Middle East futures settled at $750 per tonne on April 1, 2026. That is up 74% year-over-year. In the US, NOLA barge urea prices rose from an average of $475/tonne in late February to $520-$550/tonne within the first week of the closure. The University of Illinois farmdoc daily team documented a 28% urea price increase in just the first three weeks after the closure began, noting it was faster than the response to the 2022 Russia-Ukraine fertilizer shock.

Brazil is the other exposed basin. In 2023, 44.8% of Brazil’s urea consumption came from Gulf sources transiting Hormuz. Brazil’s safrinha (second-season) corn crop, which represents roughly 80% of total corn production, was planted through February and March. That crop has already absorbed fertilizer, the bigger problem is forward purchasing. Brazilian farmers buy nitrogen for the next soybean cycle (September planting) during April through July. If Gulf supply remains offline through Q2, those purchase contracts will reprice violently.

To put this in caloric terms: if Indian farmers apply 15-20% less nitrogen this kharif season, rice yields fall by a roughly proportional amount. India produces around 130 million tonnes of rice annually. A 15% yield decline is 19.5 million tonnes. India consumes most of its rice domestically. That math does not work for a country of 1.4 billion people without triggering either government subsidy escalation or food inflation.

The African Backfill

Capital goes where the molecules are. And right now, the molecules that bypass the Strait of Hormuz are in West Africa and North Africa.

Start with Nigeria. The Dangote Fertiliser plant in Lagos is Africa’s largest granulated urea facility, with a nameplate capacity of 3 million metric tonnes per annum. The company exports roughly 37% of its output, with the United States as a major destination.

Demand has surged since the Hormuz closure: “Demand has increased significantly because of shortages in the international market,” said Devakumar Edwin, Vice President of Dangote Industries, in a March 2026 interview with Bloomberg.

We need to keep in mind that nameplate capacity is not the same as deliverable supply, and this is where the opportunity gets specific. Dangote’s Lagos plant has been running below full capacity due to intermittent domestic gas supply. Nigerian port congestion at Apapa and Tin Can Island adds 7-14 days of delay to vessel loading. These are real bottlenecks. The current crisis creates the financial incentive to solve them because the price premium now justifies the infrastructure investment which is already arriving.

In February 2026, Ondo State signed an MOU with Resident Fertiliser for a $4 billion petrochemical fertilizer plant in Nigeria’s southern senatorial district . That is on top of Dangote’s $2.5 billion joint venture with Ethiopian Investment Holdings to build a second 3 million MTPA urea plant in Gode, Ethiopia, with completion targeted within 40 months (signed August 2025). This is not speculation. These are signed agreements with disclosed dollar amounts and timelines. Dangote has publicly stated the continent will be self-sufficient in fertilizer within 40 months (June 2025).

Now look at Morocco: OCP Group controls approximately 70% of global phosphate rock reserves. Morocco is not a nitrogen play. It is a phosphate play. The Hormuz closure affects phosphate too: 16.9% of India’s DAP/MAP consumption and 19.6% of America’s DAP/MAP supply came from Gulf sources in 2023. Morocco has the reserves, the processing infrastructure, and the Atlantic coastline to backfill that volume without touching the Strait of Hormuz. OCP reported revenues up 17% in 2025, reaching MAD 114 billion.

This thesis has a vulnerability. It sits on gas prices. If North American or North African natural gas experiences a rapid structural collapse, dormant European ammonia capacity could restart. The EU cut ammonia production by 70% temporarily in Q4 2021 when gas prices spiked. Many of those plants remain mothballed. If European TTF gas drops below the restart threshold, that idle capacity floods the market. That would blunt the Gulf supply shock and weaken the African backfill thesis. Watch European TTF gas as the key counter-indicator.

The Capital Shift

The shift is physical and it is documented.

India is in active talks with Russia, Belarus, and Morocco to diversify fertilizer imports away from the Gulf. India’s RCF has already extended its latest urea tender load date by 30 days due to the Hormuz closure. The government has extended Indian Potash Ltd’s State Trade Enterprise status for urea imports through March 2027. These are not analyst projections. They are procurement actions taken by a sovereign government racing a planting calendar.

On the production side, Dangote Fertiliser is fielding a surge in orders. The Ondo State deal signals a second major Nigerian production hub. The Ethiopia plant, backed by a $4.2 billion gas supply agreement signed in March 2026, adds another 3 MTPA by roughly Q4 2028.

Meanwhile, the headline energy capital remains focused on Permian Basin consolidation. Devon Energy and Coterra Energy are working through a $57 billion merger. That deal gets the front pages. The $4 billion Ondo State fertilizer plant and the $2.5 billion Dangote Ethiopia plant do not. But the physical operators, the trading houses that move actual molecules, are positioning in Africa because they know the chokepoint is fragile and the planting calendar is fixed.

The Exposure Matrix

This is the operational section. If you run procurement for an agricultural company, a food manufacturer, or a sovereign import agency, here is your checklist. It is specific.

Map your nitrogen origin. Pull your supplier manifest. Identify any urea or ammonia molecules originating east of the Hormuz chokepoint. Per the NDSU data, here is your direct exposure by product: if you are sourcing urea for the US market, 17.1% of national consumption transits Hormuz. For Brazil, it is 44.8%. For India’s ammonia, it is 80.6%.

If you do not know your percentage, you are already behind.

Stress test the transit route. Calculate the cost of replacing your Gulf-sourced volume from the Atlantic basin. The freight spread between West Africa and the Persian Gulf is the critical variable. As of early April 2026, Dangote’s Lagos facility is the closest large-scale Atlantic-basin urea source to both the US Gulf Coast and Brazilian ports. Calculate vessel repositioning time. For a Supramax from Lagos to NOLA, estimate 18-22 days. From the Arabian Gulf to NOLA (via Cape of Good Hope, since Suez is still available but freight rates are elevated), estimate 35-45 days.

Track the calendar deadlines. These are the dates that turn a supply disruption into a yield crisis:

India kharif urea stocking deadline: bulk must be warehoused by end of May 2026 for June-July application. The government says 18 million tonnes are in stock against 39 million tonnes of demand. The gap closes or it doesn’t.

Brazil soybean input purchasing window: April through July 2026. Forward contracts for September planting will reprice based on spot urea availability during this window.

US corn belt spring application: underway now through May. US exposure is moderate (17% of urea, 20% of DAP/MAP from Gulf) but NOLA barge prices are already up and climbing.

Track the African FIDs. Monitor Final Investment Decisions for West African and East African gas-to-fertilizer projects. These are the dates that signal when structural relief actually arrives:

Dangote Lagos expansion→ ongoing, details undisclosed. Current 3 MTPA plant running below capacity. Any gas supply improvement increases output immediately.

Dangote Gode, Ethiopia→ $2.5 billion, 3 MTPA. Signed August 2025. $4.2 billion gas supply deal signed March 2026. Target completion: ~40 months from commencement, approximately Q4 2028.

Ondo State (Resident Fertiliser)→ $4 billion MOU signed February 2026. No construction start date disclosed. Monitor for FID and groundbreaking.

Model the counter-scenario. European TTF natural gas price is your single most important counter-indicator. If TTF drops below roughly EUR 25/MWh on a sustained basis, mothballed European ammonia plants become economically viable to restart. That flood of Western production would ease the supply shock and reduce the premium on African and Atlantic-basin sourcing. As of early 2026, European ammonia production remains at depressed levels following the 2021-2022 gas crisis, with many plants still offline.

Here is what almost everyone missed this week. The 5.5 million barrel build is a domestic phenomenon. PADD 3 Gulf Coast storage absorbed the bulk : the same region that took a 6.2 million barrel build the prior week. Refinery inputs averaged 16.4 million barrels per day at 92.9% usege, 220,000 bpd lower than the previous week. The crude is not sitting because refiners are shut. It is sitting in tanks because the export and processing infrastructure cannot clear it fast enough. Barrels are trapped in the wrong geography. The physical market overseas is starving.

Oil: Brent (ICE June) settled Friday at $109. WTI (NYMEX May) settled at $111.54 after an 11.4% intraday surge on Thursday. Physical dated Brent hit $141.36, the highest since 2008.

Gas: Henry Hub prompt-month near $2.84/MMBtu.

Gold: Spot gold closed near $4,660/oz, holding above the $4,550 main key zone.

Silver: Spot silver near $73/oz. Gold-to-silver ratio compressed to 64:1.

Lithium: China battery-grade lithium carbonate at 158,500 CNY/tonne ($22,000/tonne USD), up 118% year-to-date.

The Physical vs. Paper Divergence

This is the story the headline misses. On April 2, physical dated Brent, the price for an actual cargo of crude loading in the North Sea, surged to $141.36. The June Brent futures contract settled that same day at $109.03

That is a $32.33 gap. The largest physical-over-paper premium since 2008.

Chevron CEO Mike Wirth warned that futures are based on “scant information” and do not reflect the actual disruption. European diesel futures breached $200 per barrel for the first time since 2022. These are not forecasts. These are settlement prices.

The driver is the Strait of Hormuz. Roughly 12 to 15 million barrels per day of Middle Eastern supply, about 15% of global production, is disrupted. Iraq’s Basra exports are running at a fraction of normal. The physical market is scrambling for molecules. The paper market is looking at Cushing inventories and calling it oversupply.

When the front month screams $109 and a cargo in the North Sea trades at $141, one of them is lying. The cargo is not lying.

The backwardation is the steepest in years. The 6-month time spread between front and back is running over $20. Dec-26 WTI settled near $80. Jan-27 WTI near $75. The back end of the curve does not believe this disruption survives the summer.

But there is a quality problem the curve cannot show you. The Strait of Hormuz moves medium-sour crude. The barrels building in PADD 3 are light-sweet. Refiners in Europe and Asia configured for sour feedstock cannot simply swap in Permian crude. The barrels are not interchangeable. You can look at a headline inventory number and call it surplus. But if the barrel in the tank is the wrong grade for the refiner that needs it, it might as well not exist.

The Flux Kinetics Number: $32.33. That is the physical-paper spread on dated Brent. The largest since the 2008 financial crisis. Until this gap closes, the headline futures price is not telling you the truth about the physical market.

The Supply Response That Exists on Paper

OPEC+ met Sunday, April 5, and agreed to raise May output quotas by 206,000 barrels per day. The market shrugged. Rightly so. Saudi Arabia, UAE, Kuwait, and Iraq cannot physically increase exports because the transit corridor is closed. The IEA launched a record 400-million-barrel emergency reserve release in March. The DOE initiated a 172-million-barrel SPR exchange on April 6. These are real barrels, but they take weeks to reach refiners

You cannot export molecules through a closed strait. The OPEC+ hike is a press release, not a cargo.

LNG: Hormuz’s Second Casualty

The Strait of Hormuz is not just an oil chokepoint. It is the transit corridor for a massive share of global LNG volumes. The disruption has blown a hole in global gas supply chains that U.S. infrastructure is racing to partially fill. The DOE authoriSed a 22% increase in LNG exports from the Elba Island terminal this week, Kinder Morgan’s facility in Georgia. U.S. LNG feed-gas flows remain steady. Golden Pass LNG continues commissioning near Sabine Pass, but a single terminal authorisation cannot patch a structural supply gap of this scale.

Henry Hub at $2.84 with global LNG spot above $14/MMBtu tells you the arbitrage is wide open. The constraint is not the molecule. It is the pipe to the terminal.

Metals and Critical Minerals

Gold held the $4,550 main key zone this week. After the Turkey central bank liquidation event (60 tonnes sold in two weeks), dip-buying absorbed the flush. The $4,342 floor held. Friday’s close near $4,660 confirmed the support.

Silver at $73 is doing two jobs. Monetary hedge and industrial metal. The gold-to-silver ratio at 64:1 is compressing from its March high near 66. Silver’s industrial demand story (solar panels, EV busbars, data center electrical components) is structural.

Copper at $5.64/lb. S&P Global presented data at CERAWeek showing the deficit is structural. Transformer lead times are running 30+ months. Every grid upgrade, every data center, every EV charging station needs copper and cannot get enough of it.

Lithium carbonate at 158,500 CNY/tonne is up 118% year-to-date. The EV narrative stalled, but data center battery backup demand (LFP cells, lithium-heavy, cobalt-free) is the new demand driver. At $22,000/tonne, the market is pricing in the storage spring.

For Operators: Secure medium-sour feedstock now. If you run a refinery configured for Gulf crude grades, every week of Hormuz closure tightens your supply further. Light-sweet substitution has limits. The quality mismatch is real and worsening.

For Investors: Buy the builders. Midstream operators with Gulf Coast LNG pipeline exposure and Western Canadian pipeline expansion are the structural winners. Avoid surplus-cycle commodity ETFs that track paper prices while the physical market diverges.

That is the head of one of the largest U.S. producers telling you the front-month premium is a mirage built on headlines, not sustained physical tightness. When a producer with that much exposure starts talking about a bearish curve structure, it means the hedging desks are already positioned. The signal is not in the spot price. It is in the back of the strip. Dec-26 WTI settled at $76.56. That is a $23 discount to the front month. The back end of the curve does not believe this rally survives the summer.

THE OIL AND CURVE STORY

WTI gained over 10% this week. Brent blew past $112. On Thursday alone, Brent settled up nearly 6% at $108.01. Friday added another 4.2%. The front of the curve is pricing a sustained supply removal from the Hormuz transit corridor, roughly 8 million barrels per day of normal throughput that has been disrupted for a month.

But the physical story underneath the headline is not a shortage story. Not in the United States.

Wednesday’s EIA print showed commercial crude stocks at 456.2 million barrels, up 6.9 million barrels against a consensus expectation of just 0.5 million. Refinery inputs averaged 16.6 million barrels per day. That is near peak capacity. Crude is not sitting idle because refiners are shut. It is sitting in tanks because the domestic supply machine is producing faster than the export and processing infrastructure can clear it. PADD 3 usage hit 96.7%. Cushing stocks are climbing. The America First Refining project at the Port of Brownsville, the first new U.S. oil refinery in 50 years, just had its groundbreaking confirmed for April 2026. That 168,000 b/d facility backed by Reliance will process light shale crude. But it will not contribute a single barrel of throughput for years.

The back of the curve knows this. Dec-26 WTI settled at $76.56. Jan-27 WTI settled at $75.42. The 6-month time spread between front and back is now over $23, the steepest in years. “Backwardation” is the structure where the nearest delivery month trades at a premium to future months, typically reflecting perceived near-term tightness. But when inventories are building while the curve stays in steep backwardation, the tightness is in sentiment, not in barrels. That is the definition of a paper-driven premium.

“When the front month screams and the back month whispers, listen to the whisper.”

The Flux Kinetics Number: 6.9 million barrel. That is this week’s EIA crude build. The third consecutive weekly build in the middle of what the headline calls the worst supply disruption in the history of the oil market.

THE LNG AND INFRASTRUCTURE STORY

This was the biggest week for U.S. LNG project momentum in years. 3 distinct developments landed in the same 5-day window, and together they redraw the map of North American gas liquefaction capacity for the next decade.

First: Golden Pass LNG. The $10-billion, 18.1 million tonne per annum (mtpa) export terminal in Sabine Pass, Texas, is now pulling over 300 million cubic feet per day of feed gas as it advances commissioning on Train 1. Exxon CEO Darren Woods said in January he expected first LNG in “very early March.” That deadline slipped, but infrared monitoring and LSEG data show liquefaction is imminent. RBN Energy confirmed this week that Golden Pass is expected to produce its first cargo by late March. When Train 1 comes online, it adds roughly 2.17 Bcf/d of incremental LNG feed gas demand to the Lower 48 by year-end. That is not a forecast. It is pipe that is already connected, pulling gas, and cooling down.

Second: Venture Global secured an $8.6 billion project financing and took FID on Phase 2 of its CP2 LNG project in Cameron Parish, Louisiana. That brings total CP2 financing to $20.7 billion and positions Venture Global to become the largest LNG producer in the United States, with a combined peak capacity of 29 mtpa across its facilities. The DOE also authorised Plaquemines LNG to export 3.85 Bcf/d, a 13% increase over its prior green light. Nearly 70% of 2026 Plaquemines cargoes are already contracted.

Third: TC Energy signed commercial agreements with LNG Canada this week to advance Phase 2 of the Coastal GasLink (CGL) pipeline expansion. The deal would double CGL’s throughput capacity, feeding an expanded LNG Canada terminal in Kitimat, British Columbia. Canadian Prime Minister Carney has fast-tracked it as a “project of national significance.” This is the most important Western Canadian gas infrastructure deal in a decade.

In addition, sitting in the background: Delfin Midstream confirmed at CERAWeek that its 13.2 mtpa floating LNG (FLNG) project offshore Louisiana is ready for FID as soon as its feed gas pipeline receives regulatory approval. Shell CEO Wael Sawan hinted at potential FIDs on Venezuelan offshore gas projects that would pipe through Trinidad for LNG export. ExxonMobil expects FID on the $20-24 billion Rovuma LNG project in Mozambique in the second half of 2026.

The driver most coverage missed this week is the bottleneck between these FIDs and physical molecules. Business leaders at CERAWeek in Houston warned publicly that the United States lacks the pipeline infrastructure to fill the gap between approved liquefaction capacity and actual feed gas delivery. Eight terminals are operating. Eight more are under construction. Nine have been approved but feed gas pipeline capacity into the Gulf Coast LNG corridor is near its limit. You cannot liquify molecules you cannot deliver to the terminal.

“The cargo that doesn’t exist cannot replace the one under construction.”

The Insider View: LNG stocks priced in the North American export boom two years early. The physical market is only now learning that pipeline capacity to terminals, not permits, is the real chokepoint. Midstream operators with Gulf Coast pipeline exposure win here. Pure LNG developer stocks have already had their run.

THE METALS AND CRITICAL MINERALS STORY

Gold had its worst stretch in 46 years, and then it bounced.

Friday’s close near $4,505 came after a multi-week selloff that took gold more than 20% below its January all-time high above $5,500. The proximate catalyst for Thursday’s final flush was Turkey’s central bank, which sold and swapped approximately 60 tonnes of gold, over $8 billion in value, in the two weeks since early March. Reserves fell 6 tonnes in the week of March 13 and another 52.4 tonnes in the week of March 20. Most was used in swap transactions to secure foreign currency liquidity. When a top-ten central bank buyer becomes a forced seller, the floor drops.

Friday reversed the flush. Dip-buying came in hard after support held near $4,342. Gold surged 2.6% on the day. Silver outperformed at +2.8%, closing near $70.50. The gold-to-silver ratio compressed to 64:1, which remains elevated relative to the sub-45 reading from January but off the March high near 66.

Copper surged to fresh records at CERAWeek, with S&P Global presenting data showing the supply crunch is structural. At $5.49 per pound, copper is pricing the physical deficit. A Reuters poll of 31 analysts placed the median 2026 copper price forecast at $11,975 per tonne. Unlike gold, the copper story is not about hedging or safe haven flows. It is about transformers, busbars, and cable trays that physically cannot be manufactured fast enough to wire up the data center and grid storage buildout.

• Close above the Main Key Zone (4550$), long trade toward 4700$.

• Close below Main Key Zone (4480$), short trade toward 4372$.

“Turkey sold 60 tonnes. The floor held. That tells you who was buying.”

PROJECTS, POLICY, AND CAPITAL FLOWS

The project cycle accelerated this week across every segment of the energy value chain. This is what a capital reallocation wave looks like when it arrives all at once.

On the upstream side, Woodside Energy and PEMEX launched the drilling campaign at the Trion field in the Gulf of Mexico, Mexico’s first ultra-deepwater oil development. The $7.2 billion project is 50% complete. The Deepwater Thalassa drillship arrived in Mexican waters in early March. At peak production, targeted for 2028, Trion will contribute 100,000 b/d, roughly 6-7% of Mexico’s current daily output. Production will load into the Chalchi floating storage and offloading (FSO) unit, which holds 950,000 barrels. That is 100,000 b/d of non-OPEC, non-U.S., deepwater crude entering the Atlantic Basin supply stack before the end of the decade.

The Brownsville refinery announcement, backed by India’s Reliance, is a $3 billion construction project that will process 168,000 b/d of U.S. light shale crude. Groundbreaking is set for April 2026. This will be the first new U.S. oil refinery in nearly 50 years. Why your pump price rises in hours but takes weeks to fall…

On March 23, Brent crude fell 11% in a single session. $12.25 per barrel, evaporated, gone. WTI dropped to $88.13 after trading north of $112 just days earlier. Donald Trump mentioned talks with Iran, and the oil futures market cratered before lunch with a downswing during the intraday session of -14% in 15 minutes! By that afternoon, the national average for a gallon of regular gasoline stood at $3.98, per AAA. It had not budged.

The comfortable story is that gas prices track oil prices. When crude goes up, gas goes up. When crude comes down, gas follows. This is roughly true in the same way that saying “weather follows the seasons” is roughly true. It misses the mechanism. And the mechanism is where you either make money or lose it.

Here is what almost everyone misses. The journey from an oil barrel trading on a screen in New York to a gallon of gasoline flowing into your car in New Jersey takes two to four weeks of physical movement through pipes, reactors, trucks, and underground tanks. Prices at the pump rise on expectations of what the NEXT delivery will cost. They fall on the reality of what the LAST delivery actually cost. That asymmetry is not corruption. It is accounting. It is physics. And it costs American consumers between $2 and $4 billion every single year. This is a next-quarter story with a structural tail that runs for years, and understanding the plumbing gives you an edge that most retail investors and nearly all politicians lack.

The barrel-to-bumper pipeline

A barrel of crude oil is 42 gallons. It yields roughly 19 to 20 gallons of gasoline, 11 to 12 gallons of diesel, and a grab bag of kerosene, jet fuel, asphalt, and petrochemical feedstocks. None of this happens instantly.

Step one: a refiner buys crude. On the US Gulf Coast, that purchase is typically pegged to WTI or a Gulf Coast sour benchmark. The refiner may buy on a 30 to 90 day term contract or on the spot market. Either way, the crude must physically arrive. If it comes by tanker from the Middle East, transit time was 30 to 40 days before the Strait of Hormuz blockade. Now, with ships rerouting around the Cape of Good Hope, add another 10 to 15 days. If it comes by pipeline from the Permian Basin or Western Canada, figure 5 to 15 days. The crude then enters the refinery’s atmospheric distillation column (the tower where it gets heated to separate into product streams by boiling point), and a given batch takes 2 to 3 days from crude charge to finished gasoline.

Step two: refined gasoline moves to a distribution terminal. On the East Coast, the dominant artery is the Colonial Pipeline, carrying roughly 2.5 million barrels per day of refined products from Houston to Linden, New Jersey. Transit time: 14 to 18 days. From the terminal, a tanker truck carries 8,000 to 9,000 gallons to a gas station with underground storage tanks holding 20,000 to 30,000 gallons. A busy station burns through that inventory in 3 to 7 days.

Add it up. From crude purchase to gasoline in your tank: two to four weeks in normal conditions. Today, with Hormuz disrupted and tanker reroutes in effect, that window stretches longer.

The price of crude oil constitutes about 45% of what you pay at the pump, per the EIA’s latest breakdown for 2026. Federal and state taxes account for roughly 15 to 20%. Refining costs and profits, about 15 to 20%. Distribution and marketing, 10 to 15%. The retail station margin is tissue-thin: 2 to 4 cents per gallon. If you think the guy behind the counter is getting rich, look again.

Replacement cost: the hidden engine

This is where the asymmetry lives, and I have watched it confuse journalists and legislators for twenty years.

Gas station owners do not price based on what they paid for the fuel already in their underground tanks. They price based on what the NEXT truckload will cost. Economists call this replacement cost accounting. It is rational. If crude spiked $10 today and the station’s next delivery in three days will be $0.25 per gallon more expensive, the station raises its pump price today. If they do not, they sell their existing inventory at a loss relative to what it costs to restock. With margins of 2 to 4 cents per gallon, absorbing a quarter’s worth of price increase would bankrupt them in a week.

So prices rocket up. The FTC published a study analysing 15 years of daily data from over 150,000 gas stations. The finding: pump prices rise more than four times faster than they fall after equivalent crude oil movements. About 70 to 80% of a crude oil increase passes through to the pump within one week. Research from the Dallas Federal Reserve found roughly 12% of a crude price increase hits retail gasoline within the first day alone.

Now flip it. Crude crashes, as it did on March 23. The station still has fuel in the ground that was bought at the higher price. The next delivery is cheaper, but the station owner faces no competitive pressure to slash prices immediately. Here is the catch. In local fuel markets, which are oligopolistic (a handful of stations within a five-mile radius competing for the same commuters), no single station has an incentive to cut first. If you drop your price by 10 cents and your competitor across the street drops by 5, you gain a few extra fill-ups but you just gave away margin on every gallon. So everyone drifts down slowly.

The FTC data shows only 40 to 50% of a crude oil decrease reaches the pump within four weeks. The full pass-through takes six to eight weeks. During that gap, retailers capture expanded margins. Multiply that across 150,000 stations and 378 million gallons of daily US consumption, and the asymmetry transfers roughly $2 to $4 billion per year from consumers to the retail and wholesale fuel chain. Not as conspiracy. As structure.

Refinery squeeze and the crack spread

The current crisis amplifies every layer of this. The Strait of Hormuz blockade, now in its fourth week as of late March 2026, has removed an estimated 7 to 10 million barrels per day of Middle East production from accessible supply as per first estimations. Brent crude surged approximately 50% from pre-conflict levels. Iraq declared Force Majeure, cutting Basra output from 3.3 million bpd to 900,000 bpd. The US lifted sanctions on 140 million barrels of Iranian crude already at sea on March 20, a sign of how acute the supply panic became.

But here is the thing. High crude prices do not automatically mean proportionally higher gasoline prices, and low crude prices do not automatically mean proportionally lower gasoline prices. The crack spread (the difference between wholesale gasoline price and the crude oil input cost, which serves as a proxy for refinery profitability) is an independent variable. And it is widening.

The EIA’s latest Short-Term Energy Outlook projects gasoline crack spreads in 2026 will be wider than in the previous two years. This matters enormously. US refinery capacity has shrunk by approximately 400,000 barrels per day due to closures, including LyondellBasell’s Houston refinery in Q1 2025 and Phillips 66’s Wilmington plant. No new US refinery has been built from scratch since 1977. The remaining fleet is running at 91.4% utilisation as of mid-March 2026, per EIA data. There is almost no slack.

Marathon Petroleum reported a 44% jump in refining margins in Q4 2025. Refiners are not the villains of this story. They are the bottleneck. And bottlenecks collect rent.

If the Iran conflict resolves and crude drops back toward the EIA’s pre-crisis forecast of $74 per barrel for 2026, gasoline crack spreads will remain elevated because the underlying refinery capacity shortage persists. The crack spread acts as a floor under pump prices even when crude falls. The real supply constraint in American fuel markets is not crude oil. It is the hardware that turns crude into something your engine can burn.

I have seen this pattern before, in 2013-2014 and again in 2022. Crude spikes, everyone screams about oil companies. Crude falls, everyone expects instant relief. The refinery margin quietly widens, and nobody mentions it.

The chokepoint the market forgot

The Strait of Hormuz handles approximately 20% of global oil and liquefied natural gas flows. When Iran blocked from February 28, the world rediscovered a lesson it learns once per decade: geography is a physical constraint, not a line on a map.

But there is a domestic chokepoint that receives almost no attention. The Colonial Pipeline moves 2.5 million barrels per day of refined product from the Gulf Coast to the Eastern Seaboard. That is one pipe serving 100 million people. When Colonial went down for six days in May 2021 due to a ransomware attack, gas stations from Georgia to Virginia ran dry within 72 hours. That vulnerability has not been fixed. It has been patched with cybersecurity upgrades and inventory protocols, but the physical reality remains: the East Coast is a pipeline-fed monoculture for gasoline supply.

If Hormuz stays blocked through the summer 2026 driving season, and US refineries are already running above 91% with no new capacity, and the Colonial Pipeline is the sole major artery for East Coast supply, it gets ugly. On current trajectory, if Brent sustained above $120 through Q2 2026, the EIA’s March STEO implies retail gasoline could average above $4.00 per gallon nationally for the quarter, with West Coast prices potentially exceeding $5.50.

What would break this thesis? A rapid full Hormuz reopening would crash crude prices. But the pump price decline would take four to eight weeks to realy happen... The structural refinery capacity shortage would persist regardless. Only significant new refining capacity, which is years from commissioning even if approved today, would close the crack spread gap. This is not a thesis that hinges on geopolitics alone. The plumbing is permanent.

My Flux Kinetics diagnostic :

1. Map your crude-to-pump lag for your region.

• East Coast (PADD 1): 17 to 25 days (Colonial Pipeline transit plus station turnover).

• Gulf Coast (PADD 3): 5 to 10 days (local refineries keep it shortest).

• West Coast (PADD 5): 20 to 30 days (CARBOB rules and shipping create the longest feather effect).

• Midwest (PADD 2): 10 to 18 days (mixed pipelines and refining).

2. Track the crack spread, not just crude.

• Pull the 3:2:1 crack spread (three barrels crude, two gasoline, one diesel) from EIA or CME data. When the crack spread widens even as crude falls, retail prices will stay elevated. The crack spread is the leading indicator. Crude alone will mislead you.

3. Time your fill-ups using the feather lag.

• When crude has fallen for 3 to 5 days but pump prices lag behind, you should wait to Fill Up. When crude rises for 2 to 3 days, fill immediately because the rocket heads your way soon.

4. Evaluate refiner exposure if you hold energy equities.

• Companies that refine oil and also move it through pipelines (like Marathon, Valero, and Phillips 66) profit the most right now because the gap between crude cost and gasoline price keeps growing. Oil producers benefit from high crude prices too, but they are drilling less and spending carefully. So right now, refining and pipeline companies are the better bet over companies that just pump oil out of the ground.

5. Watch for regulatory signals.

• California is pushing gas companies to be more transparent about pricing, which could help prices drop faster after crude falls. The FTC has data backing this up. Watch for similar moves in other states.

Crude oil trades in seconds. Gasoline moves through pipes and trucks over weeks. The space between those two realities is where the pricing asymmetry lives, and it is structural, not criminal. The Hormuz crisis made it spectacularly visible: Brent dropped 11% on March 23 while pump prices sat at $3.98 and barely flinched. On Thursday I watched WTI touch $100 intraday. It settled at $98. Brent closed at $112, highest since July 2022. And the December 2027 WTI strip? It settled at $69.

That is a $28 gap. The front month is screaming for barrels. The back of the curve is sitting there calmly, pricing a world where all of this gets fixed. One of them is wrong.

The consensus walking in was straightforward. Supply panic accelerates, the SPR is a joke, every dip gets bought. That held for about two days. Then Iraq declared force majeure on Friday. Basra output dropped from 3.3 million barrels per day to 900,000. Brent still could not hold above $113 on the close. When a headline that ugly fails to print a new weekly high, the tape is telling you someone large is selling every rip.

Here is what almost everyone missed. Gold had its worst week since 1983. Down over 10%. At the same time oil was surging to multi-year highs. That is not risk-off. That is a margin call. US gold-backed ETF holdings dropped 30 tonnes in a single week. The energy complex got so expensive to hold that it started pulling cash out of everything else. Gold is liquid. Gold got sold.

Oil: Brent settled sharply higher at $112.19/bbl (+8% weekly, +56% monthly). The Strait remains functionally closed. Only 21 tanker transits since late February versus 138 per day before. WTI closed at $98.23/bbl (+3% weekly, +48% monthly).

Gas: Henry Hub settled at $3.10/MMBtu (-2% Friday). Totally insulated from the global gas crisis. Permian associated gas keeps the domestic grid comfortable. Meanwhile European TTF jumped to EUR 59.26/MWh (+88% monthly).

Gold: Settled at $4,489/oz (-3% Friday, -14% monthly). Worst weekly decline since 1983.

THE OIL AND CURVE STORY

The supply disruption stopped being a headline this week. It became an inventory problem.

The EIA data for the week ending March 13 showed US commercial crude inventories up 6.2 million barrels to 449.3 million. About 1% below the five-year average. Refinery runs climbed to 16.2 million barrels per day at 91.4% utilisation. Crude imports jumped 772,000 barrels per day week over week. Rerouted cargoes are making it to the Gulf Coast. They are taking the long way around, but they are arriving.

The US is drowning in domestic supply while the rest of the world fights over barrels.

Now look at the curve. WTI April at $96.19. May at $95.37. June at $91.74. December 2027 at $69.65. Brent is even steeper. May at $103.55, June at $99.55, December 2027 at $74.72. That is textbook backwardation. The market needs crude now, not later, so nearby barrels trade at a big premium to future ones. But the back end is quietly pricing a world where spare capacity returns and non-OPEC supply from Guyana, Brazil, and the Permian covers the gap.

The Brent-WTI spread at $14 is the widest since 2022. It tells you exactly how much the seaborne market is straining while US landlocked crude sits comfortable behind pipeline walls.

Iraq’s force majeure on Friday was the week’s sharpest signal. Basra went from 3.3 million barrels per day to 900,000. Saudi output is down to 8 million bpd from 10.1 million in February after shuttering the Safaniya and Zuluf offshore fields. Net effect: 4 to 5 million barrels per day off the global market.

The Number: 6.2 million barrels. That is this week’s EIA build. It landed while the narrative says barrels are disappearing. They are disappearing from the Gulf. If you trade the disruption headline without checking where the barrels actually sit, you feed the pros.

Does high energy prices could trigger a global recession ?

THE LNG AND INFRASTRUCTURE STORY

Wednesday changed the global gas market for years with the South Pars gas field damage, the world’s largest natural gas reservoir. It takes out 12.8 million tonnes per year of liquefaction capacity for three to five years. Roughly 3% of global supply, gone.

European TTF surged to EUR 59.26/MWh. Up 88% month-over-month. Asian JKM pushed toward $26/MMBtu.

A third of global fertiliser trade moves through the Strait. Urea prices are up 30 to 40%. Fertiliser plants across Asia are shutting for lack of feedstock. If you model the LNG disruption without the ammonia disruption, you are underestimating the shock.

Meanwhile Golden Pass LNG on the US Gulf Coast is weeks from first cargo. Every cargo it produces in Q2 prices at massive premiums. The Asian arbitrage is printing $5-per-MMBtu-plus net backs.

The Insider View: Equities priced the future. Physical just lost the present. Golden Pass, starting up during a supply crisis, now carries a premium that did not exist three days ago.

THE METALS AND MARGIN-CALL STORY

Gold dropped to $4,489. Down 14% over the past month. Worst weekly decline since 1983. ETF holdings shed 30 tonnes. Third straight week of outflows. Over 60 tonnes liquidated across three weeks. All of this happened while every safe-haven trigger in the world was flashing.

The explanation is simple. It is mechanical. The energy complex got so expensive to carry that traders had to sell something else to meet margin. Oil implied volatility hit levels we have not seen since 2020. When your crude position suddenly needs double the margin it did a month ago, you sell what you can. Gold is deep, liquid, and it trades around the clock.

Gold did not fail as a hedge. It was liquidated to fund one.

Silver fell to $67,60 but it held better than gold because solar panel demand and electronics gave it a floor. The gold-to-silver ratio compressed toward 66:1. Silver’s split personality, part precious metal, part industrial input, protected it on the downside.

Lithium pulled back at $20,400 a tonne the price assumes almost zero EV growth. But the physical market is tightening around grid-storage orders. That is the asymmetry.

The current situation is changing constantly. A tweet, a headline, a breaking news shift the whole market. This is not the moment to be brave. This is the moment to be smart. Protect your money first. Always.

The Trade: Following our analysis from previous weeks, the “Bull Retest Zone” didn’t hold after 3 attempts and we went straight back to the “Main key zone”.

If prices open at $4500, I will enter a pull back trade on the “Main key zone” with a stop loss below $4440 to reach Target 1 as a first take profit. This will give us a 4:1 Reward/Risk ration.

Reduce the risk? wait for a second upward test on the main key zone before entering the long trade.

“Main key zone” not holding ? Short trade toward $4300 level.

CHOKEPOINTS AND CAPITAL FLOWS

Three bottlenecks seized the market this week. Capital is repricing all of them.

First, Strait throughput. 21 tankers since late February. Down from 138 per day. A 97% collapse. The only alternatives are the Saudi East-West Pipeline to the Red Sea, already rerouting 3.8 million barrels per day, and the Cape of Good Hope, which adds 10 to 14 days per cargo.

Second, SPR release logistics. As I wrote last week, barrels in a salt cavern are not barrels on a tanker. The 400 million barrel headline sounds huge. The combined global release rate from 31 countries with different infrastructure lands around 3 million barrels per day. Against an 8 million barrel per day hole, that leaves a 5 million barrel deficit every single day.

Third, LNG liquefaction spares.. Every EPC contractor with LNG experience is about to get a phone call.

Week Ahead: What to Watch

Wednesday March 26: EIA Weekly Report (week ending March 20). First print after the infrastructure damage.

Golden Pass update. If first-cargo loading confirms this month, JKM and TTF reprice higher. If delayed into April, Henry Hub reprices lower as feed gas backs up.

Friday March 28: CFTC Commitments of Traders. Managed money added 77,672 net-long positions in ICE Brent last week. Total: 428,704. If that number rolls over, the tape is closer to a top than most think.

Gold ETF flows. Three weeks of outflows, 60+ tonnes. If outflows stop, the liquidation is done and gold resets. If they continue, the capital drain has legs.

Action Items

For Traders: If the situation ease, immediate short above $100, stop at $103 daily close, target $93. That is a +7%.

For Operators: Front load Gulf Coast maintenance now. Domestic crude is plentiful. Secure cryogenic components and LNG spares immediately.

For Investors: Buy the builders. Avoid commodity ETFs long front-month crude. The $28 front-to-back gap means you buy at the top every time the contract rolls.

The Paper Illusion vs. Physical Reality

Central banks bought 863 tonnes of gold in 2025. But the question every institutional allocator should ask is not “how much are they buying?” It is “what kind of buyer is this?”

An ETF buyer is price-sensitive, momentum-driven, and can liquidate in an afternoon. A central bank buying gold for national security does not sell on a 5% drawdown.

This changes the architecture of corrections. Before 2022, gold corrections found support where marginal physical buyers and Asian jewellery demand kicked in. Now, corrections find support where sovereign reserve managers see value. When the paper market tries to trade down on a hawkish Fed print, the state steps in to accumulate.

That floor is higher, stickier, and far more aggressive.

“The buyer that sets the floor is not the buyer that sets the headlines. The state buys on dips. The ETF buys on momentum. Know which one you are trading against.”

The Vault Drain: Repatriation as a Weapon

The non-negotiable chokepoint of the global gold trade is the LBMA unallocated float. This is the pool of gold in London vaults that backs the paper market. It functions like fractional reserve banking for bullion: multiple claims exist against each physical bar. As long as most holders never call for delivery at the same time, the system works.

But sovereigns are calling for delivery.

They no longer trust foreign custody. The story isn’t just that Poland is targeting 700 tonnes. The story is that Poland is building out domestic vault capacity in Warsaw to hold it. Kazakhstan is storing its record 57-tonne haul domestically. When Brazil bought 43 tonnes in three months, it didn’t leave those bars sitting in a London vault.

Every tonne repatriated to a domestic vault is a tonne permanently removed from the float that lubricates the paper gold market.

When trust in the global financial system fractures, governments rush to pull their physical assets out of the jurisdiction of their rivals.

If official sector buying stays above 800 tonnes per year and an increasing share moves to domestic custody, the float drains. Not overnight. Slowly. Then all at once.

Bilateral Settlement and the Opaque Consequence

As we established in Part 1, Trading Economics data flagged that 57% of 2025’s central bank purchases were unreported.

Here is the mechanical consequence of that opacity: Bilateral settlement.

More than half of official-sector demand is now bypassing the traditional clearinghouses. It does not flow through COMEX. It does not hit the LBMA. It settles government-to-government, refinery-to-central-bank.

Mine production in 2025 was 3,672 tonnes. Growth runs at roughly 1% per year. Total supply, including recycling, was 5,002 tonnes. When you subtract the massive ETF inflows and retail bar/coin demand, the physical market is tightening in a way that no paper instrument can relieve. The market is pricing gold with incomplete demand data, right up until a physical supply squeeze forces a gap up.

The Reserve Crossover

This vault drain has pushed the global monetary system across a historic threshold.

Gold officially overtook US Treasuries as the largest reserve asset held by foreign central banks in 2025. Gold’s share of global reserves climbed to roughly 18% in 2024 and continued higher through 2025, while the dollar’s share declined from above 30% in the mid-2010s to roughly 23%.

This is not a blip. It is a regime change in reserve composition. The foundation of global sovereign savings is shifting from sovereign paper to physical elements.

Chokepoints, Capital, and the Sovereign Hardening Thesis

This is where gold connects to the broader Flux Kinetics thesis. The gold vault drain is just the canary in the coal mine.

The same sovereign balance sheets accumulating bullion are hardening their positions across every physical commodity that matters. Saudi Arabia’s Manara Minerals closed a $2.5 billion acquisition of a 10% stake in Vale Base Metals, securing exposure to copper and nickel supply chains. Aramco Trading signed a 20-year LNG offtake agreement. Nations are locking down power transformer manufacturing capacity.

The scramble for unprintable assets is rapidly expanding from the central bank vault to the industrial supply chain, forcing a brutal repricing of physical chokepoints.

Gold. Copper. LNG. Uranium. Transformers. These are not separate stories. They are one strategy: harden the national balance sheet against a world where financial claims can be frozen, supply chains can be weaponised, and the assumption of open markets is no longer safe.

The Exposure Matrix

If central bank buying sustains above 800 tonnes per year, and if even two or three major unreported buyers surface with revised holdings data, gold’s structural floor resets above $4,500 per ounce permanently, with corrections that rarely breach 10%.

Here is how you adapt:

• Stress-test your custody assumptions. If you hold gold via unallocated accounts in London or Zurich, understand that the float backing those claims is shrinking. Calculate your ratio of allocated to unallocated holdings. If your gold cannot be delivered to you within 48 hours, you are holding a claim on a thinning pool.

• Map your buyer-type exposure. Pull the breakdown of who holds gold in your portfolio’s reference market. If you are positioned for a correction that assumes ETF liquidation, ask whether the sovereign bid absorbs the dip before your entry triggers.

• Connect gold exposure to your broader hard-asset thesis. If you are long copper, LNG, or grid infrastructure but short or flat gold, you are implicitly betting that the same sovereigns securing energy and metals supply will stop securing their reserves. That is an inconsistent position. Audit it.

One counterargument is worth naming. If central banks slow purchases or reverse, the sovereign floor disappears and gold reprices hard. That risk is real. But the $300 billion in frozen Russian reserves already happened. The rethink of custody is structural, not cyclical. The floor may wobble, but it is not going back to where it was.

The volatility structure itself has shifted. Gold is not a commodity trade anymore. It is the reserve side expression of a global sovereign hardening cycle. The vaults are draining. The question now is not whether you understand that. It is whether your portfolio does.

Barrels in a salt cavern are not barrels on a tanker. Release speed is the constraint nobody is modelling.

On Thursday morning, I watched Brent crude collapse toward $97 intraday after the IEA announced the largest coordinated reserve release in history. By Friday’s close, the front-month contract violently ripped back above $103. The paper market flinched at the sheer volume of 400 million barrels. Physical operators, the guys I used to work alongside, simply did the math. The Strait of Hormuz chokepoint handles 20 million barrels per day of flow, and this week it is functionally closed.

The consensus entering this week was that strategic reserves would instantly crush the rally and force prices lower. But when the market stops believing its own story, three things happen. Capital flees the headline trade. Spreads invert violently. The physical reality of logistics and pipeline capacity overrides the political press release.

Here is what almost everyone missed this week. Barrels sitting in a Gulf Coast salt cavern are not barrels loaded on a VLCC. Release speed is the ultimate constraint, and the U.S. pipeline infrastructure simply cannot move those strategic barrels fast enough to plug an immediate 8-million-barrel-per-day supply gap.

This Week’s Settle

Oil: Brent settled sharply higher at $103.14 (+7.7% weekly), recovering violently from Thursday’s SPR headline as the massive $10 backwardation forced physical buyers to secure prompt supply. WTI closed higher at $98.71 (+8.8% weekly), trailing Brent as the localised influx of U.S. strategic reserves capped the domestic upside.

Gas: Henry Hub finished softer at $3.13 (-3.1% weekly), completely insulated from the global energy chaos as robust Permian associated gas absorbed new LNG feed demand without tightening the broader grid.

Gold: Settled lower at $5,020/oz (-2.0% weekly), testing the five-thousand floor as a surging dollar and rising real yields temporarily overpowered safe-haven physical accumulation.

Silver: Gapped lower to $80.54/oz (-5.5% weekly), leading the metals correction as the widening 62:1 ratio signals industrial buyers are pausing procurement at these levels.

Lithium: China battery-grade lithium carbonate closed flat at 159,000 CNY/tonne ($21,800 USD) (+0.6% weekly), establishing a hard floor this week as data-center stationary storage demand quietly replaced fading EV growth.

THE OIL AND CURVE STORY

The IEA’s Thursday announcement authorised 400 million barrels of strategic petroleum from 31 member countries. The U.S. committed 172 million barrels. Deliveries are scheduled to start hitting the Gulf Coast within ten days. The paper market digested this massive headline and kept bidding the physical barrel anyway.

I spent years looking at terminal throughput models, and I can tell you that release rate matters more than total volume. The U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve can physically release about 4.4 million barrels per day at maximum flow rate from its Gulf Coast salt caverns.

Coordinating 31 countries with different infrastructure and pipeline specifications means the actual combined global release rate will land closer to 3 million barrels per day. Against a Hormuz disruption removing roughly 8 million barrels per day from the physical market this week, that leaves a massive net deficit of 5 to 6 million barrels per day.

The arithmetic is brutal. The curve is doing the arithmetic.

The backwardation tells the entire story. Brent’s six-month spread widened to $10 this week, the steepest since early 2022. When the curve is this steep, it screams for immediate molecules. Strategic reserves are slow molecules. The market needs fast ones. Refiners are running hard at 90.8% utiliaation because crack spreads are printing money, and they cannot afford a feedstock gap. Gasoline stocks drew 3.7 million barrels. Distillates drew 1.3 million barrels. Jet fuel demand surged 7.3% year-on-year.

The Number: 8 million barrels per day. That is the physical hole. The headline says 400 million barrels covers it, but the math says release logistics will stretch that volume over four months of inadequate offset.

THE LNG AND INFRASTRUCTURE STORY

While the world watched the Strait of Hormuz, the U.S. Gulf Coast quietly rewired the global gas arbitrage. The Golden Pass LNG terminal hit 300 million cubic feet per day of feed-gas intake this week. Exxon confirmed first LNG production is weeks away.

This terminal pulls entirely new demand on the Gulf Coast pipeline grid. Train 1 alone requires roughly 700 million cubic feet per day at full rate. Yet Henry Hub settled at $3.13. The feed-gas pull is being completely absorbed by Permian associated gas production. The domestic market barely felt it.

Asian JKM LNG spot prices are sitting above $14/MMBtu. Even after liquefaction tolling and shipping costs, the netback to a Gulf Coast seller is north of $8.00. Every single cargo Golden Pass produces in Q2 will price at war-premium levels. The economics are printing $5-per-MMBtu-plus netbacks. Every midstream operator with pipe in the ground knows it.

The Insider View: The bifurcation is that equities priced in a saturated domestic gas market years ago while the physical market only now feels the massive arbitrage window opening for midstream operators. Golden Pass is the ninth operational U.S. LNG terminal. It is also the first to start up during an active supply crisis.

THE METALS AND CRITICAL MINERALS STORY

Gold dropped from Monday’s $5,114 high to settle at $5,020. The proximate cause was pure dollar strength. The DXY index firmed sharply this week. Real yields on the 10-year TIPS ticked above 2.1%, pulling institutional capital toward bonds and temporarily starving non-yielding metals.

Silver took a much worse beating. It fell back to $80.54. The gold-to-silver ratio pushed above 62:1 this week. When that ratio widens this aggressively, physical silver buyers are stepping back and waiting for a better entry. They are pausing industrial procurement.

This is where it breaks. The paper market is pricing precious metals purely on Fed rate expectations. The physical market is pricing a structural vault drain by central banks that has not stopped. The structural bid from sovereign buyers remains intact.

Lithium carbonate on the Guangzhou Futures Exchange held at 159,000 CNY/tonne, up 0.6% on the week. The market shrugged off a 13% single-day crash on March 3 and recovered within days. The floor is being set by data-center stationary storage procurement, not automotive demand. At $21,800 per tonne, lithium is pricing in zero EV growth. But the physical market is tightening around grid-storage orders. That is the asymmetry we look for at Flux Kinetics.

CHOKEPOINTS AND CAPITAL FLOWS

Three physical bottlenecks seized the market this week. Capital is violently repricing all of them.

First, Hormuz throughput. With millions of barrels disrupted, every alternative route is running at maximum capacity. Capital is flowing aggressively into tanker companies and pipeline operators that serve non-Hormuz routes.

Second, Gulf Coast terminal capacity. Golden Pass coming online absorbs pipeline capacity that was previously available to other terminals. Midstream companies with excess Gulf Coast pipe are repricing their tariffs upward right now.

Third, SPR release logistics. The U.S. reserve draws from four sites in Texas and Louisiana. Pipeline capacity from those specific sites to the coastal refineries is finite. A maximum draw rate assumes perfect pipeline availability. In practice, maintenance schedules and allocation conflicts will slow the physical barrels to market by weeks.

MY FLUX CONVICTION

When I worked the trading floor and linked it to my ground experience, the easiest way to lose your shirt was to trade a political headline without verifying the engineering behind it. We are seeing a massive bifurcation right now. The paper market is selling oil futures because 400 million barrels sounds like a flood. The physical market is buying prompt cargoes because 3 million barrels per day of cavern flow cannot fill an 8 million barrel per day maritime hole. Do not confuse the political announcement with the cycle. The constraint is the pipe, and the pipe always wins.

The Trade: Following our last week brief, the Target 1 line didn’t hold as a resistance and we are coming back now to this famous “Bull Retest Zone”. We need to keep an eye on U.S Dollar Index.

If I’m not already IN, this zone can be a great entry point with 4850$ as Stop Loss and Target 2 as a Take Profit : 3 to 4 Risk/Reward Ratio.

Week Ahead: What to Watch

Monday March 16: China Industrial Production (Feb). If the print falls below 5.0% YoY, expect copper and silver to extend Friday’s losses as industrial demand fears compound. If above 5.5%, metals bounce.

Wednesday March 18: EIA Weekly Petroleum Report. If Gulf Coast PADD 3 receipts fail to show a massive build, the market will realiz the SPR barrels are delayed, sending Brent back to test $107. A draw would be explosive for prices.

Thursday March 19: Golden Pass Operational Update. If Exxon’s scheduled investor call confirms a first-cargo delay into April, Henry Hub will reprice lower as feed gas backs up. If on schedule, JKM reprices higher on confirmed new supply.

Friday March 20: Baker Hughes Rig Count. If the count breaks above 600, the market will start pricing a structural second-half U.S. supply response.

* Hold Brent longs in the $95 to $105 band. Treat a daily close below $94 as your hard stop.

For Operators:

* Front-load your Gulf Coast maintenance immediately. Every day of downtime you schedule now is a day you avoid competing with SPR barrels for pipeline capacity next month.

Your macro model is missing half the global central bank bid.

Somewhere on a reserve management desk in Warsaw, a screen shows spot gold at $5,100 an ounce. Three monitors to the right, the 10-year TIPS yield reads 1.80%. Positive. In any textbook written before 2022, those two numbers cannot coexist. Positive real yields mean a real return on sovereign paper. A real return on sovereign paper is supposed to starve gold of oxygen. That is how it worked for four decades.

The prevailing read is familiar. Gold is up on geopolitical anxiety, Fed cut expectations, and a weakening dollar. Safe-haven demand. Macro uncertainty. The same story recycled since 2020, just with bigger numbers attached. Most allocators still model gold as a real-yield trade with a risk premium bolted on top. Strip the premium, they assume, and gold drifts back toward the curve.

Here is what that model misses. Gold gained roughly 66% in 2025, its steepest annual climb since 1979, per the World Gold Council. It printed an all-time high of $5,589 in late January 2026. And it did this while 10-year real yields stayed firmly positive, ranging between 1.5% and 2.2%. The metal set 53 new records last year. The correlation between gold and real rates did not just weaken. It fractured. The reason is not rates. It is a change in who buys. Over the next 12 to 24 months, this buyer shift determines whether gold consolidates above $5,000 or reprices higher still.

The Broken Correlation: 2022-2026

The inverse relationship between gold and US real interest rates held reliably for decades. When real yields fell, gold rose. When real yields rose, gold rolled over. The opportunity cost of holding a zero-yield metal was nearly mechanical.

If you want the baseline on how sovereign debt math is forcing this pivot, Ray Dalio laid out the exact blueprint for gold as the #2 reserve currency early last year:

Then the Federal Reserve started hiking in March 2022. Real yields climbed from negative territory to above 2%. Gold should have rolled over. It did not. Apollo chief economist Torsten Slok called it plainly in February 2026: “When the Fed started raising interest rates in 2022, the strong correlation between gold and real rates broke down.” Gold has since gained more than 150% from its pre-hike levels.

Now look at the numbers. The LBMA gold price set 53 all-time highs in 2025 alone. The annual average price hit $3,431 per ounce, up 44% year-on-year. As of early March 2026, 10-year TIPS yields sit around 1.80% according to Trading Economics data. Gold trades near $5,100. The old model says one of these prices is wrong.

The old model is measuring the wrong buyer.

The Invisible 57%

Central banks bought 1,080 tonnes of gold in 2022. Then 1,051 tonnes in 2023. Then 1,092 tonnes in 2024. In 2025, the figure came in at 863 tonnes, per the World Gold Council. That looks like a pullback until you measure it against the 2010-2021 annual average of 473 tonnes. Even the moderation ran 82% above the prior decade’s norm.

But here is the thing. According to Metals Focus estimates, roughly 57% of central bank gold purchases in 2025 were opaque. Unreported. Conducted by institutions that do not disclose to the IMF in real time, or at all. The WGC’s own data showed only 328 tonnes of reported purchases for the full year. The rest is estimated from refinery throughput, trade statistics, and residual analysis.

That single number should reframe how anyone prices this market. More than half of the most durable demand source is invisible to the tape. It does not show up in COMEX positioning. It does not flow through LBMA clearing. It settles bilaterally, government-to-government, and appears in the data only when the analytics firms catch the residual. Every model built on visible flows is systematically underweighting demand by roughly half.

This explains the baffling staircase pattern of 2023-2026. Gold pulls back 5-8% on a dollar spike or a hawkish print. The visible market reads weakness. The invisible market reads a buying opportunity. The floor reasserts. Corrections are sharp, shallow, and short-lived. I have watched this pattern repeat seven or eight times now. It stops being coincidence around the third.

Custody Insurance, Not Inflation Hedge

Here is the catch. This is not about inflation. US CPI is running around 2.7%. Elevated, but not the kind of monetary crisis that historically sent gold parabolic. And it is not about the dollar index, which has been volatile but structurally intact.

It is about custody.

In February 2022, the G7 coalition froze approximately $300 billion in Russian central bank reserves. The West demonstrated it could immobilize a sovereign’s foreign-held reserves in response to geopolitical conflict. That was the shot heard around every non-aligned reserve desk on earth.

To understand the exact moment the dollar shifted from a neutral reserve to a weapon of war, Saleha Mohsin’s post-mortem is required viewing:

Gold is the only reserve asset a sovereign can mine, refine, transport, and vault on its own territory, outside any foreign counterparty chain. It cannot be frozen by executive order. It cannot be switched off by disconnecting a SWIFT code. It does not require a custodian in Brussels or New York to honor a claim.

In a world where reserves can be weaponized, gold is custody insurance.

The sovereign accumulation dossier (2025 data):

• Poland: 102 tonnes acquired. World’s largest sovereign buyer for the second straight year. Accumulation target raised to 700 tonnes by Governor Glapiński. Stated motive: National security.

• Kazakhstan: 57 tonnes acquired (record high). Stated motive: Net buying mandated until global tensions ease.

• Brazil: 43 tonnes acquired over three months, snapping a four-year absence.

• China: 16 consecutive months of buying through February 2026. Official reserves pushed to 74.22 million troy ounces.

These buyers do not sell on price pullbacks. They buy through them. They are not maximising risk adjusted return. They are minimising existential exposure.

From Bullion to Copper: The Regime Hedge Spreads

Gold sits at the front of a longer queue. The same governments treating bullion as a strategic asset are treating copper, uranium, rare earths, and power transformers as strategic hardware. Poland is not just buying gold for national security. It is building defense infrastructure, hardening energy supply chains, and spending at wartime tempo. The PBOC is not just accumulating gold. It is stockpiling industrial metals and securing long-term supply.

This suggests gold is the first asset to get repriced in a regime-hedge cycle because it is the simplest. No supply chain. No processing bottleneck. No technology risk. Just metal in a vault. But the same calculus that drove central banks into bullion is now pulling capital toward industrial metals that sit at physical chokepoints in the energy transition and the defense supply chain.

If gold is the canary, copper is the mine.

The Regime vs. Macro Diagnostic

Strip back the narrative. When gold moves, the question is always the same: macro trade or regime shift?

Run the following rule-set.

1. The Real-Yield Diagnostic

Pull the 10-year TIPS yield weekly from Trading Economics.

• IF real yields are rising AND gold is falling -> THEN classic macro is driving. Standard models apply.

• IF real yields are rising AND gold is flat or rising -> THEN regime-risk demand is absorbing the macro headwind. Weight exposure toward structural flows.

2. The Structural Floor Diagnostic

Track WGC monthly central bank statistics. January 2026 showed a severe drop to 5 tonnes.

• IF the Q1 three-month average recovers above 20 tonnes -> THEN the structural floor is intact.

• IF it stays below 10 tonnes through Q2 2026 -> THEN reassess the core thesis entirely.

3. The Opacity Gap Diagnostic

Monitor the spread between Metals Focus total estimates and IMF reported data.

• IF the gap widens -> THEN sovereigns are increasing covert accumulation. Bullish.

• IF the gap narrows -> THEN transparency is improving or buying is genuinely slowing.

4. The Custody Kill-Switch

• IF annual central bank buying falls below 473 tonnes (the 2010-2021 historical average) for two consecutive years -> THEN the structural bid has broken.

• Until then, dips in the sovereign class of buyer will be absorbed.

Gold is trading north of $5,100 in early March 2026 with real yields at 1.80%. That is not a macro trade with a geopolitical premium. It is a verdict on the monetary architecture. The textbook relationship between gold and real yields assumed all sovereign reserves were safe in foreign custody. That assumption died in February 2022 in the Euroclear vaults in Brussels.

DEEP DIVE: Hormuz, Hedging, And The Surplus Story

When a war shock hits a market that already expects a surplus, three things happen at once. Paper explodes higher, producers rush to lock in hedges, and the curve tells the truth about where barrels are really scarce. That is exactly what played out around Hormuz this week.

THE INFRASTRUCTURE OR FID STORY

Golden Pass, the large LNG export plant backed by ExxonMobil and QatarEnergy on the Texas Gulf Coast, pulled in hundreds of millions of cubic feet per day of gas as it stepped into first LNG production. Years of delays, a bankrupt contractor, and a fresh export licence extension have turned a once marginal timeline into a live feed gas sink in a tight global gas balance.

The significance is bigger than a single terminal. Golden Pass links cheap Henry Hub molecules to Asian and European buyers exactly as Hormuz closures divert Qatari and other Gulf cargoes, which hard wires a new arbitrage between U S gas and war stressed LNG benchmarks and locks in years of high load factors on Gulf export infrastructure. Every extra cubic foot Golden Pass pulls is one less molecule Europe can count on if Gulf LNG sits behind drones and naval stand offs.

The Insider View: The bifurcation is that LNG equities priced Golden Pass years ago while the physical gas market only now feels the constant pull from new trains. The spread between Henry Hub and war inflated seaborne gas benchmarks is where the real optionality sits, not in the headline flat price of WTI.

THE METALS OR CRITICAL MINERALS STORY

Spot gold traded around 5,114 dollars per ounce on Friday, up on the day after softer payrolls but down on the week, its first loss after a record streak. Silver bounced back into the mid eighties yet still sat below the earlier spike highs after a margin driven flush that had briefly sent it through the triple digit line earlier in the year.

The War Premium Zone on Brent held each intraday pullback and call skew priced in more upside tails, yet the metals complex faded, which tells you that funding costs and dollar strength are now fighting the safe haven bid. The Bull Retest Zone on gold has behaved more like a volatility reset corridor than a breakdown level, with real money demand still anchored in the wide support band carved out by the January melt up.

The driver most coverage missed is that positioning in gold has shifted from pure war hedge to a slow burn stagflation hedge where sticky energy prices meet weakening data. That flips the metals narrative from short term headline insurance to medium term macro defence and keeps upside skew bid even into a red weekly candle.

The Trade: After reaching our Target 2 on 2nd of March, prices has corrected strongly back to Bull Retest Zone which played a perfect support zone. For directional traders, staying long above the Bull Retest Zone keeps the 5,500 area in play while silver needs sustained trade back through the old triple digit zone before any new secular leg higher is credible. The play can be a long trade to enter post daily tested close above Target 1 (5,174$) only, toward Target 2 again first, which is +4% trade.

THE OIL OR GEOPOLITICS STORY

The key print of the week came from US data showing a crude inventory build of around three and a half million barrels alongside a gasoline draw and a small distillate build. Industry data showed an even larger crude build above five and a half million barrels, keeping stocks above last year even as flat price ripped higher.

The Number: 3.5 million barrels. That is a crude build during one of the largest war premiums in years and a Strait of Hormuz effectively shut for normal tanker traffic. Even if Gulf exports are choked for weeks, the market is still structurally long inventory by tens of millions of barrels and trending toward a projected surplus next year, and on top of that Washington is now openly weighing futures market measures, so the pure fear trade that prices permanent scarcity cannot survive that math.

Physical confirmation came from elevated floating storage with large volumes of sanctioned crude parked on tankers and rising inland stocks while Gulf Coast refiners ran hard. Forward spreads blew out into the strongest drift since the last major shock as nearby barrels paid the war premium while the back of the curve still traded a comfortable balance world that surplus forecasts and producer hedging both validate.

PROJECTS, INFRASTRUCTURE, AND POLICY

China’s latest five year energy plan set an oil production target around two hundred million tonnes per year, below last year’s record levels, deliberately framing domestic crude as roughly flat while strategic stocks and diversified gas supply do the heavy lifting on security. The blueprint also highlighted more pipeline gas, including preparatory work on the next Siberia corridor, plus expanded coal to gas and coal to liquids projects as a bridge through the decade.

This matters because the largest crude importer is saying that the next barrel of security comes from storage, pipes, and demand management rather than aggressive upstream expansion. It also hardens the surplus narrative at the back of the curve, where non OPEC growth and measured demand combine with a China that prefers to buy and store war discounted cargoes rather than chase new domestic production, which is exactly the world the strip is starting to price.

On the timeline, reserve build and pipeline work play out over years while this week’s Hormuz disruption is an immediate shock, so the policy signal weighs most on 2027 and 2028 pricing rather than the prompt. That locks in a world where front month barrels can trade like a war market while far dated contracts still discount a managed surplus, which is the bifurcation that curve traders live inside.

The Policy Pulse: The strategic angle still underpriced is how China’s commitment to more stockpiling and diversified gas imports shifts the marginal buyer for distressed Gulf cargoes and Atlantic Basin LNG away from Europe and toward Asia in any extended crisis. In volume terms that is worth hundreds of thousands of barrels per day and several billion cubic feet per day of flexible demand that can tighten balances far beyond what top down demand models imply.

For operators: The combination of crude builds, higher refinery runs, and Golden Pass absorbing more gas argues for pulling forward maintenance and procurement on Gulf Coast logistics while freight and capacity are still available. Producers with Gulf exposure should use this window to secure pipe and export slots, recognising that any prolonged Hormuz disruption will keep structural pressure on export infrastructure even if flat price later retreats from the spike.

For investors: The live gap is between surplus projections for next year and a paper market now willing to price a war premium that policymakers are already threatening to lean against, which favours balance sheet strong US producers and LNG infrastructure owners over pure beta names.
